Online Music Swapping Legal (for now)
The Canadian courts have decided that the CRIA does not have the right to sue people they believe are sharing music illeagly.
Basically the courts are saying that placing the files in a directory that is accessed by a p2p app, is not in itself "distributing or authorizing reproduction" of the music.
I dont know how they came to that conclusion but I wont argue with it. I would have thought by placing my music into "My Shared Folder" would be the same as distributing it?!
The thing with kazza and similar apps, is that sharing your entire drive is quite easy to do, and many new computer users do it quite by accident. Do a search on kazza for resume.doc
Maybe I will just play dumb when the CRIA come knocking, tell them "I didnt know my music was shared" or "I use kazza to look at resumes, not to get music"
For the time being at least, I will be able to download tunes for evaluatng before going to the music store and dropping $17-25 per cd, plus 7% GST + 8% PST on a cd that might only have 8 songs on it and 3 that are actually any good.
Here is the CBC article
Here is a Toot's and
the Maytals song.
Here is a Tom
Waits song.

mexican cusine
Today I stopped of at a little South American grocery store, run by a lovely Colombian woman and her Mexican husband. We usually eat the generic supermarket "Taco" kits and although they are tasty, we would like to prepare a more authentic meal when the mood for Mexican food strikes us.
The lady was so cool, she took me around the store, showed me eveything that I'd need and then taught me how to prepare it all. I have a jar of very chunky and spicy green tomatoe salsa, and some tomatoe-cilantro seasoning, refried pinto beans, fresh tortilla's and some special Mexican cheese, plus a jar of really hot looking peppers.
This weekend I think we will cook it all up and see what its like.

tired
I got home from my part time job around quater to 3 last night and then got up at 7am for my normal job, so I was a bit of a zombie this morning. Luckily no one seemed to notice.
I am so sad that yet another young girl was found dead yesterday after a search since last October when she was taken from her home as she slept.
As usual, no clues, no suspects and the horrifying reality that this monster will very likely repeat this crime upon another young victim.
There was a lobby to have any convicted criminal submit DNA samples to a national database, this of course was quashed by the Canadian goverment, they felt it violated the civil rights of the criminals. Of course a database like this might not prevent the next attack from happening, but we as a society, have to do something, the safegaurds we have do not work, here is another example of an all too familiar news story, I wish you could read that and say "wow, thats never happend where I live" but you can't can you?
Cecilia Zhang would have turned 10 years old tommorow.

gnome
In case your wondering, I have switched from using fluxbox to gnome for the time being. The main reason was I use the gnome terminal a lot now, and flux has some funny syntax for configuring menues.
I wanted for example to have a menu item for ssh so the command
was something like gnome-terminal -e 'ssh
someplace.com'
but the flux file has to quote that command,
so the single ' would not work, I tried all kinds of quote
combinations but it failed all the time.
Rather than investigating further I switched to Gnome.
Ok there were more reasons than just that, but I have to rush of now for work, so I will list them some other time.

Im turning into Mom
I watched another movie recently, this one was Runaway Jury, it wasnt that bad, except the premise was a bit far fetched, that in big law cases, juries are controlled by these behind the scenes types, from CIA-like headquarters, complete with hidden court cameras and wire taps, anyway, if you go along with that, it is a decent enough movie to watch.
One scene however is funy, John Cusack's character leaves his Mac on and one of the bad guys break in, hook a usb drive to it and copy all of his files in a matter of minutes. Not sure if thats possible even, but the fact that he seemingly had no passwords on his computer was amusing.
We all know if it were real, he'd use linux on an x86 and not a Mac, the only reason Mac's are in so many movies is because they pay the studios.
This morning Sarah and I got up, started breakfast and did some cleaning, of course her bf lay soundly asleep in his bed, so I used one of Moms techniques and barged in to the room with the vacumn, making sure to bump into stuff and make as much ruckus as I could.
It's scary some of the other things I catch myself doing that are so "Mom"
Jolly, Rebel Chickorita and I played Chestal, DaBomb and
Freelancer today in a fun girls vs guys match, they beat us 8-0,
but it should be noted, they are all cheaters and had 900ms lag,
also they were using modified spawn code
Actually, they played well, and we played like crap. Oh well, next time I hope we can at least score one point!

new job
I got home from my regular job, got changed and went downtown to do my first "get acquainted" shift at my part time job, it went really well, nothing different than any other bar I have worked in except its a little more "upscale".
What upscale basically means, is if a young couple for example
come into a regular bar, I say hi, take their order, and after
serving them, they or I usually chat a little, unless I am busy,
most times you get to meet some nice people and there is some truth
that you make more tips by being friendly and outgoing than by
being moody and aloof
In an "upscale" cocktail bar, you generally find that people treat you as "just" the bartender or waitress, they do not want to know anything about you, and many barely even acknowledge you. However, its they do tip well as a rule so either way I can live with it.
Most times the real fun is with the other staff anyway, and this evening was good fun, so I hope it will work out there. Dragging myself into the office will not be pleasant if I work a weekday shift, but I think I might only get an occasional Thursday night shift, the rest being weekend nights.
I have a new favorite song, well, for this week anyway, you can listen to it here.

Veronica Guerin
I watched Veronica Guerin tonight and thought it was a very good movie, kinda sad, but a great performance from Cate Blanchett. Sometimes when a movie is based upon a true story, people complain that hollywood interfered too much, added things, or put looks and star power ahead of acurate portrayal. I suppose it is true, the real Veronica Guerin or the real Erin Brokovich were no where near as pretty by most peoples standards as Cate Blanchett or Julia Roberts, but at least the movies were made and the stories were told.
I have decided to accept a part time job offer from a friend who manages a sort of yuppie high end "Martini Lounge". Its sort of a watering hole for the buisness types that work in the Bay street financial district of Toronto. I wont do more than a shift or two a week and they guy that runs the place is a reall good friend so it might be ok.
That descision then of course warranted a trip to mall on the
way home, I neededa skirt and one or two other small things, and of
course walked out of there $445 lighter Oh well, I have no guilt, i deserve
it!

bzflag
There is a new league being formed in bzflag with the focus on "winning" and not so much on having fun. I dont know what to think of that to be honest.
It does not appeal to me really, but the the state of the current league isnt very appealing either. I am sad these days, I am thankful for the cool friends I have made, but I realize now that it will probably be the end of my involvemnt with the league, and eventually the game. I have more fun just hanging out on irc than actually playing the game.
I might try the FFA style of play for a while, although i I
could never get the jumping down pat, I will try it once more, and
if that dosent work maybe just dosomething else, this isnt much of
a solution as I know I will miss the friends I do have and will go
back to ctf. so yeah, I kinda wish I had gotten into Tuxracer or
GlTron instead of Bz
I was had to stand behind my boss the other day and watch him fill out this web form by typing in one field, then taking his hands off the keyboard and giving focus to the next field by moving the mouse, then back to the keyboard to type with his patented "two index finger" style.
I couldnt handle it, and ended up butting in and doing it for him. He is not capable of using the tab key to move to the next item, and yet I am the one getting harrassed by the IT cops.
Another annoying thing he does, is type a word in google, then, while still still staring at the screen, take one hand off the kb, reach blindly for the mouse and use it to click the "search" button when all he has to do is hit enter!
I know its nitpicking but when you see someone do this over and over it just builds up.
I have been hoping for the new Gnome 2.6 to come out so i can compile xchat-gnome, but today I learn that one of the gnome.org servers was compromised and the she site was unreachable, so it looks like I will be waiting for a while yet.

edit css
Speaking of movies, I watched The Missing over the weekend, a western movie set in New Mexico. It wasnt too bad but was not exactly nail biting either, I would not buy the dvd, put it that way.
I found a really cool Mozilla extension
It lets you play with css settings directly in the browser and applies them immediately. Quite a nice tool. Isnt it nice to be able to choose a plugin for your browser that you want? I am amazed that Microsoft's IE will still allow all kinds of stupid popups and "enhancements" to be installed behind your back. How long has IE been on the market now? This is case where people would benifit from MS copying code, please MS, copy mozilla's code, line for line, then name it IE. Ok, mini rant over.
This is my favorite song for the time being, with thanks to the #tacobeam folks of course for letting my browse their music!
Oh and happy birthday to my favorite mole!!!

dict flash and screen
Often I find my self using Dict to look up the meaning or spelling of a word, but had always wanted a thesaurus to go along with that, Debian has a huge thesaurus package called moby-thesaurus, so you'd use it like:
dict -d moby-thesaurus <word>
so I made an alias in my .bashrc, alias thes='dict -d moby-thesaurus' You will need to apt-get dictd dict moby-thesaurus and then any extra dictionary files you would like. 'apt-cache search dictd |less' for the full list.
Now I can happily, agreeably, airily, blessedly, blissfully,
blithely, cheerfully,cheerily, delightedly, ecstatically, elatedly,
enthusiastically, exultantly, favorably, fortunately, gaily,
genially, gladly, gleefully, heartily, hopefully, irrepressibly,
jauntily, joyfully, jubilantly, lightly, luckily, merrily,
opportunely, optimistically, peaceably, pleasantly, propitiously,
prosperously, providentially, rapturously, rhapsodically,
satisfyingly, smilingly, successfully, swimmingly, willingly, with
good cheer, and with pleasure, use synonym's to my hearts content.
Screen is a nifty program for *nix, a good guide was recently posted on Kuro5hin One of the problems I had with screen however was that it wont beep on errors, but instead flash the screen, this is fine of you happen to be looking at your screen, but not good if for instance you using irssi and it is set to beep on private messages, as usual though, an rc file comes to the rescue. ~/.screenrc in this case.
#turn off visual bell, beep instead like your supposed to! vbell off
#kill startup message startup_message off
# define a bigger scrollback, default is 100 lines defscrollback 1024
# An alternative hardstatus to display a bar at the bottom
listing the # windownames and highlighting the current windowname
in blue. (This is only # enabled if there is no hardstatus setting
for your terminal)
hardstatus on
hardstatus alwayslastline
hardstatus string "%{.bW}%-w%{.rW}%n %t%{-}%+w %=%{..G} %H %{..Y}
%m/%d %C%a "
There is a bunch of stuff you can add in there, to make it automaticly ssh into a remote host for example, or open an email client like mutt or pine, or even start Elinks and go surf the web.
I should say I am not a big fan of flash, I have yet to see a really useful implemntation of it, ok, so you can make some stupid movie as an intro to your site, thats fine if you would like people to never visit again. For the most part, we dont like intro's, or "even click to enter".
There are some good flash sites I guess that look cool, render nicely and all of that, but many people do not have flash installed and too many times I have seen no "non-flash" version available, so the surfer goes home, unfulilled.
Anyway, there is a point to this...many sites have sold thier soul to Satan and are using flash ads, these are horribly annoying and now, thanks to this firefox plugin, the ad will not load, instead you see a little box saying "flash...click to play"
I have tried yet another blog software called pLog, it seems pretty good except in order to change the look of it, i will need to use pre made templates or write one of my own using Smarty, some sort of php template parser. I have no clue about this and can just now cludge my way through CSS, I do not want to learn another tool like this one when I dont even know any php. So I dunno, the search continues for now.

21 grams
I watched 21
Grams tonight, I am still not sure what to think of it, it did
make me cry, but then I cry pretty easy watching a movie
The mood of of the movie is bleak and desperate right from the start, so this isnt one your typical "feel good" films. Sean Penn is very good, as usual, as are Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro, even as Benicio ages, growing a little bit more rotund each yeah, he's still "got it" as far as I am concerned.
The way in which they directed this movie is a little confusing, I dont mind flashbacks as a technique, but this film had flashforwards, with events revealed to you that actually have not yet occured. This is fine, but often takes longer for you to grasp what is going on. So If you do watch the movie, you need to concentrate somewhat.
I have been using alot of ginger lately in my meals, I made a little shrimp/scallop stir fry with ramen noodles, lemongrass, cillantro, ginger, and leeks of all things! It was pretty good and topped off with some crushed chilies turned out nice and spicy too.
I am still plugging away at regex's but have yet to google a really good guide, the IBM workshop guides I usually like but even that one, they throw out a line like:
An interesting thing about the caret and dollar-sign is that they match zero-width patterns. That is, the length of the string matched by a caret or dollar-sign by itself is zero (but the rest of the regular expression can still depend on the zero-width match). Many regular expression tools provide another zero-width pattern for word-boundary (\b). Words might be divided by whitespace like spaces, tabs, newlines, or other characters like nulls; the word-boundary pattern matches the actual point where a word starts or ends, not the particular whitespace characters.
I have read that at least seven times, five times slowly and out loud, I still have no clue what zero-width means.
Then they give this one:
A regular expression can have literal characters in it, and also zero-width positional patterns. Each literal character or positional pattern is an atom in a regular expression. You may also group several atoms together into a small regular expression that is part of a larger regular expression. One might be inclined to call such a grouping a "molecule," but normally it is also called an atom.
atoms? molecules?
bah.

testing new blog software
I set up another user and enabled a webspace so I could test some other blog tools without jepordizing this one. Movable type has yet to work as advertized, some wierd permission errors, in their forum's I was asked to make sure my public_html folder was chmod 777!? I do not like the idea of anyone being able to write to or delete anything in my webspace. I also found out that MT will soon release a "pro" version, which likely means the regular version will be stripped down in some form or another, which isnt that appealing.
Grey Matter looks ok and also Geeklog, so I might try those, Jeff set up php nuke for me also, although it looked like overkill at the time, it might warrant another look.
Trepan's really cool ctf map still lags out my server, he has tried all sorts of fixes but cant figure out what is wrong. So we decided to not run it, and are now running a standard ctf map.
This link really pisses me off, and didn't sit too well with the linuxchix mailing list, you can read more here. I almost hope that guy was a troll, if thats the case, its not so bad, I mean trolls do what trolls do right? most times people just ignore them and they go away. I kinda feel however its a little bit deeper than that.
I think I am getting a new phone to play with for work, at least my boss said I can if I behave. It is the Motorola V300 and looks pretty nifty.
I really want the V600, it has mp3 ring tones I can make any song or soundbite
my ring tone. It isn't available on our network yet, hopefully in
the summer sometime.
March 14
Movable Type
I am thinking of switching this blog software to Movable Type. It seems to have
everything I need including comments built in. I set it up tonight
and fooled around a little, but there are some thing I do not like,
and I am trying to decide weather it is worth the trouble to
switch, If I do switch, I would likely lose the archives in the
format that they are in now, but could always link to them somehow
I guess. Also MT has a default user and password that you login
with, then create a normal user. I dont like anything that has
default users. If for some reason, you decide to finish your setup
at some later date, anyone who knows this default username (i.e
every single MT user) could log in and be a bad guy. So the fisrt
thing I did was delete that user, which it happily let me do,
however, it then logged me out, and of course there were no other
users specified, so I couldnt log back in.
So that pissed me off a tad. I will have to retry it again tommorow I suppose. All this so people can leave comments....
March 13
Gnome, Bash and Sound Juicer
The beta version of Gnome 2.6 is
out and hopefully it will soon find its way into Debian unstable, I
dont use a gnome desktop but I do use alot of Gnome apps, and I
want to try out xchat-gnome, still in its infancy
but, I do so love new software
Anyway, in order to compile this, I need Gnome 2.6, so I will have to wait for a while.
I found out today about an alternative to Grip for ripping my cd's, I am going to use oggs this time instead of mp3's, I did a little test, and the ogg file did seem to sound better, but takes up way more room than mp3's. Sound-Juicer isn't as full featured as Grip, in fact there is very little configuration to do, but I remeber way back being totally confused by Grip and all those options. SJ is very simple, and for some reason uses less cpu than Grip does when encoding.
I have now the opportunity to login to a Gentoo Linux pc, and havent really poked around much, but for some reason was impressed with the default bash prompt! I have never really tried to make a useful prompt, instead settling for the most part on Debian's default. Now i set mine to display some colors, most importantly, it will show the hostname in a different color for each pc I ssh into. I am not really able to compare Gentoo to Debian as I would have to set it up here and do the same stuff I do now on it. I doubt that chance will come for a while.
Each week we take turns to clean the bathroom, the rest of the place me and Sarah clean, today was her bf's turn, and suprise suprise, it took him an entire eight minutes to clean the bathroom. He didnt even touch the shower or tub, saying "I'll do that when I'm taking a shower
I really don't know where men get these ideas from?!
March 12
my script
It is apparent that my regex skills are not what they need to be to make a script to rename my mp3's. I can actually use a program called Easytag which does everything I need to do, but I have this stubborn notion in my head that using a bash script will, in the long run, bring me more satisfaction, offering me not only organized mp3's, but some measure of satisfaction knowing I had done it my self. This remains to be seen.
I am told I need to use sed to do what I want, so right now, I am re-reading my regex tutorial, and then will re-read the 3 page IBM sed tutorial, written by "that gentoo guy", Daniel Robbins.
Then, finally I will start to see how to make this script work.
I removed my account on orkut, partly because I seem to be
getting alot of spam sent to my home account, and a gazzilion
"messages" to my orkut account, also because I rarely visit the
site anymore, the forums there are not exactly vibrant, and perhaps
I am too anti-social to participate in a social-networking
experiment?

bzflag, oh the drama
So once again this game I used to love is irritating me. This time it concerns declining matches with other teams. I have seen only 2 of my teamates in the last few weeks, so our team isnt exactly on the active list. Then when I finally do see one, we start to play a little fun battle and are challenged immediately to a match, to which my reply is "no thank you, not right now" Because of this, we are apparently scared?! At least this is what the other team is telling each other. Another term used recently was "those teams have no balls"
Firstly, I dont always feel like a match, I feel like killing 15 mins or so on a little break, blowing off some steam. But this apparently isnt a valid excuse.
Also, I think allowing 2 on 2 matches ruined this league, Its debateble even if it increased the league activity or not. It sure didnt make matches more fun, at least for me. I dont like them, and will avoid them if at all possible. The most fun I ever had was 3 on 3 matches with bullets flying all over the place.
I understand some of these guys live and die for matches, I respect their enthusiasm and willingness to compete, however, I feel that my right decline if I am simply not into it, should also be respected.
Oh and as for being scared? I am scared of a lot things in this
life, little red and green tanks aren't one of them. Finally, with
regards to having no balls? heh... I wouldn't want it any other
way.
I am attemting to reorganize my mp3's, to rename them, put the artists in seperate folders etc, some of this I thought would best be done with bash scripts, so off I struck into the land of tests and loops.. I havent gottten much success and spent 20 minutes figuring out how to test if a file is a file or a directory, the "test" operator is a bash builtin, so "man bash" right? Well that gave me a terse bare bones explination, I was determined not to go on the net and copy a script, so I kept reading, finally, getting all pissed off with it, I fried off a leeter to the linuxchics and was told to try "man test".........sigh..
Anyhow, this was the info I needed and I can move past the seemingly trivial part and work on the rest of it.
March 07
snowman
There was about 5cm of snow today At first I wasnt very happy, but I
pulled into my brother's driveway and was trapped in my car as 4
kids pelted it with snow balls. The snow was absolutely perfect for
snowballs, nice and wet. So after that, I climbed out, got pelted
some more, and then we started making a snowman. He was pretty big,
we rolled this big ball of snow around the lawn, set it in place
and made second one, well the second one was so big, I couldnt lift
it, and had to get my brother to come out and place it.
We even had a carrot for the nose, some straw from a hay bale
for hair, a scarf and two rocks for the eyes. The kids loved it and
I must confess, he looked pretty good. I'd like it to not snow
anymore though, it was fun for today, but enough is enough. The
spring time here is beautiful, and I cant wait...one of the nicest
things about living in Ontario, is you do get four real seasons,
there are parts of Canada for example, Vancouver that although
being one of the prettiest cities in the country, does not get a
real winter, then, on the east coast, you get 8 months of winter,
and 4 months of crappy snowmobiling
March 06
relearner
I was playing around with style sheets this weekend and was discouraged somewhat by the amount of stuff I had forgotten since the last time I had done it. I need to re-learn all sorts of things, its not that I had completely lost everything I had learnt, but the little details had somehow slipped away. I think the reality of it is, If you want to do anything in computers, do it everyday, and I am too interested in going off on wild little computing tangents than sitting down and seriously learning one area over and over until I am some sort of guru.
The thing is, I like knowing how to fix stuff in Debian and how to get it installed, to maintain it and to set up things like Apache and Samba, but I also love fooling around with Gimp or messing with html. Anyway, its no big deal, just a little frustrating sometimes.
There is a really cool South American deli/grocery store that opened near me, this is good, really good news, as we are like total taco maniacs here, anything remotely tex-mex we go crazy for, making it all from scratch too, none of those "El Paso" taco in a box kits.
Tommorow I will go see my little nephew and play some xbox, he loves to play xbox with me, one of those snowboarding games, its so cute, before I had even seen the game he had my character picked out and the clothes, with my name, all ready to go. He totally kicks my ass of course, I think I have beaten him twice in the last year :-\ but the look on his face is worth it.
March 05
server progress
I have managed with the help of Paul and Learner to get a couple of things worked out. The 2 30gb drives on my server are now seen by the system as one 60gb drive less 3gb / partition. So yay for LVM! It isnt that hard actually and I am pretty sure I could do it again on my own next time. So for the time being, I will not run out of room in my mp3 directory.
Then I set up the Apache webserver, which is relatively easy to do, but needed help with the authentification. So the plan is I can lend a song or two to one of my freinds. The username/password thing isnt working right now, so I still need to look into that, and of course fix the default Apache welcome page that it ships with. Thank you guys for the help!
My bzserver is having some issues too, Trepan's map, although being one of the best ctf maps I have seen, tends to add lag to the game, he thinks its the world wepons, making the server work too hard, that in turn, slows it delivery of packets to the players. I really hope he can get around this, it is a great map and gets nothing but praise from the players. I might run a plain ducati style ctf server too, Im not sure though if there is an interest for that, Quol has alrady two fast servers, so maybe I should spare my bandwith.
It is raining today, kinda cool though, the drops are sliding slowly down my window and there is wonderful fresh smell in the air. The only downside is the park's skating track has all but disappeared, and I only skated there twice this winter.
March 04
good eats and bad tv
I watch very little televison, but I am increasingly becoming fed up with my favorite channels when I do watch. The Discovery channel seems to run American Chopper and American Hot Rod shows non stop, and TLC, the supposedly learning channel, has a slew of "people decorating other people's houses" shows, and a bunch of "reality" dating shows. Lets not forget the robots beating up other robots, although thankfully, that seems to have died down.
I do still have Good Eats to fall back on, it is possibly the most entertaining cooking show on television, Alton Brown is not only funny and entertaining, but always cooks interesting and fun dishes, while presenting them in his unique and off beat way.
I have been advised to use LVM to make my 2 30gb drives appear as one 60gb on my server.
This will most likely require a reinstall and setting up Samba again, but whatever, its better than having a messy file system right?
Here are a few songs...
Zero 7 -
waiting line
Rinocerose
- Machine Pour Les Oreilles
Rinocerose - Le
Mobilier
I am listening to alot of French music these days for some reason, and Rinocerose are one of my favorites.
March 02
wireless routers
It does not appear that we can easiy run a network cable from the upstairs computer room to the downstairs living room, so Sarah wont be able to watch tv and chat on msn, a long time dream of hers! We would literaly have to drill holes in the floor and stuff, or run the cable along the sideboards of each room and it would look icky.
So we are now thinking about buying a wireless router or Access Point, I'm not sure what an AP is...I am guessing that its something I can plug into my existing router port and it acts as a link between the wireless network card and the lan. Cost wise they do not seem much cheaper than an actual wireless router, so Id like to buy a wireless router, and plug it into the "uplink" port of my existing router and then have two routers. I dont know if this will work, but it sounds exciting.
Two routers is a long time dream of mine
Another thing...some of you networking gurus might know....I type this blog in Vim, via an ssh connection to my gracious webhost that is in California, and sometimes I notice that I am typing faster than the screen can render the letters, this is annoying, its like talking to someone and watching them struggle to understand what you said 5 minutes ago. It only happens at certain times, and I usually run top to see if there is any big cpu hogging program running, but there isn't. So I guess it must either be my ssh connection to the host, or some other network activity going on locally to the host. Is there a "top" for networks? I am aware of the plethora of networking tools linux comes with, but most are too in depth for my needs. I need to type for example "netop" and it will show me what app is using the most bandwith on the system. let me know if there is such an animal.
I have a couple of songs to share but right now am too lazy to link them up, so you will have to wait...
March 01
is it spring already?
I have slept, both nights in my new place, with the window open! I am hoping and hoping that this is a sure sign that spring is indeed here, and the slush and snow are gone for another year. This is probably not the case, but I will let myself indulge in this little fantasy.
The Oscars were quite entertaining this year, Although LOTR pretty much swept up an award in every category that it was nominated in, its important to note that the "big" acting awards...best supporting actor and actress, and best actor, best actress all went to non LOTR people...Sean Penn and Charlize Theron (who I thought looked amazing!) won the best actor/actress awards and Renee Zellweger and Tim Robbins won best supporting awards.
The best writer of an original screenplay went to Sofia Coppola, for Lost in Translation, I have already told you here what I thought about that movie. For me though, the best writing award is never really given the respect it deserves. It isnt easy to act in a movie or even direct a movie, but neither compare to writing a movie, Im not talking about adapting a novel to a screenplay, but an origianl screenplay. The people that write the movies, never seem to get the billing they deserve, which is a shame really.
I did mention to someone on irc that LOTR will set a record, and for once I was right!
Billy Crystal was really funny, as usual, and so were Jack Black and Will Farrel. Not a bad show over all.
Trepan sent me a map for bzflag, it is a pretty cool ctf map with world weapons. I'm running it now but seeing as the list server is down, no one can find servers :-/
I am setting up rsync on my webhost to mirror my weblog folder on my home computer, just in case. It seems a little bit cryptic at first, but its a cool utility, only backing up the portian of a file that has changed, not the entire file. While reading up on this, I noticed this line in my /etc/services file:
microsoft-ds 445/tcp # Microsoft Naked CIFS
Microsoft Naked? Maybe it time for me to switch back to windows
Yesterday evening we were putting up pictures and doing a few final things...it looks like we are done! We even cooked a meal and I did eat finally...for the first time in this last week from hell, we were able to sit back and relax, so Im very happy about that. It took us 21 days, from the day we were told to move to the day we were all settled into a new place, which really isnt that bad now that I think of it.
