Design scale/rotate/translate/shear icons #3BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Deepak, Daniel_RTags: artwork, concept, icons, design

BRL-CAD is a 3D modeling systems where one is very often performing edits on geometry using common matrix transformations that scale, rotate, translate (move), and shear (skew) geometry. We need good application icons to indicate those actions

Define a set of useful icons that we might want to use in our main GUI application (e.g., on a top toolbar). Submit the icons in a raw editable format (e.g., SVG, AI, PSD, or XCF) as well as an overview of them all in PNG format.

The icons should be scalable at least from 16x16 through 128x128 while maintaining a clean appearance.

Sean on December 7 2014 17:44 UTCsizes

Aditya,

Some of these look good, but I'm afraid there are a handful of technical issues I'm hoping you can resolve:

  1. they're huge!  they need to be scalable vectors or consistently some standard size like 512x512.  it's actually a little difficult to see how well some of them will display at smaller icon sizes (e.g., 32x32).

  2. unified preview please?  you don't need to make .jpg files of each icon individually. Just one preview showing the icons at 32x32 or 64x64 would be sufficient.  the raw working files should be higher-resolution or vector art, but even they don't need to be larger than 1024x1024

  3. merely adjusting the color from black to gray does not constitute a useful variant. ;)

  4. the scale icon is the same as a common "scroll" moniker, which makes it a little confusing.

  5. the rotate icon arrow probably will be lost when scaled small.

  6. there is an error in the skew icon on the base and top right side of the skew was moved slightly downward.

  7. I don't see how the translate icon indicates translation

Deepak on December 8 2014 11:08 UTCImprove transalte icon

Hi Aditya,

Good job! I figured out that your icons :- scale, shear and rotate looks good but translate icon like Sean said doesn't look like translate icon. It's more like a move icon i.e in four directions. Translate icon needs some improvement .

Aditya Gulati

Well done, Aditya Gulati!  Congratulations!

As for new design tasks, I'm not entirely sure, but I believe you can  find out on #brlcad, on irc.freenode.net where you can ask any of the mentors.

Good luck!

Sean on January 14 2015 21:09 UTCfollow-on

Aditya,

There are now a slew of additional icon tasks added!  Just search on the title or tags for icons and you'll see there are five other icon sets we would love to see you design, consistent with this icon set.

Hope you can tackle them all in time!
