Design scale/rotate/translate/shear icons #4BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Isaac Kamga, IshwerdasTags: artwork, concept, icons, design

BRL-CAD is a 3D modeling systems where one is very often performing edits on geometry using common matrix transformations that scale, rotate, translate (move), and shear (skew) geometry. We need good application icons to indicate those actions

Define a set of useful icons that we might want to use in our main GUI application (e.g., on a top toolbar). Submit the icons in a raw editable format (e.g., SVG, AI, PSD, or XCF) as well as an overview of them all in PNG format.

The icons should be scalable at least from 16x16 through 128x128 while maintaining a clean appearance.

Rohit, I do like these!  Where did you get your inspiration from?

These look great, but there's a little bit of room for improvement that should greatly improve the appeal of these icons.  You indicate the action very well, but there are a few inconsistencies:

  1. the arrows ... rotate's arrow is the only one with a gradient, scale's the only one that's bidirectional and the only one with a hairline outline around it, shear's arrow is thin and overlaps the diagram (unlike the others), and translate doesn't use an arrow at all but a hand for some reason(?).  they should all be consistent and identical in styling to avoid confusion/implication questions.

  2. rotate, shear, and translate all use a dashed outline to nicely indicate before and after, yet scale does not.

  3. scale is also the only one to show three states whereas the others all display only two.  again, consistency improves their usability

  4. you can see the dashed line under shear, but not under rotate or translate .. again, consistency needed.

With those fixes in place, this should be good to go.  Thanks for your efforts!

Rohit Agarwalon December 9 2014 11:20 UTCChanges Made

Sir, I made some changes according to your suggestions. My new files are

Scale 1_2.xcf

Rotate 1_2.xcf

Translate 1_2.xcf

Skew 1_2.xcf

I got ideas from all the softwares I have used and my imagination.

Rohit,

There are now a slew of additional icon tasks added!  Just search on the title or tags for icons and you'll see there are five other icon sets we would love to see you design, consistent with this icon set.
