Design a new website landing page for BRL-CAD #9BRL-CAD

The website of BRL-CAD is undergoing significant changes. We have a design mockup at http://cpp-tricks.com/brlcad/ and http://beta.brlcad.org but there are various aspects that we know could use improvement. One of those is the main page that will be presented when someone goes to http://brlcad.org

Redesign the front page of our web site. The only requirement is to adhere to a consistent visual style and make it impressive. Be creative. The output should be 2 design files, one for large screen, and one for small screens (e.g., mobile). The format can be images or html/css/javascript mockup.

Submit your design in whatever raw editable format you used along with a screenshot in png format. Also submit a brief write-up (this can be a txt file upload or detailed in a comment) telling us why is it an improvement over existing design.

I have attached the design of the home page to be viewed on a laptop or tablet. I am working on the design for a smaller screen -smartphone. Please send me your feedback on this. I have explained why I have made the changes in the .txt file.

Hey skyler, here's my review for your web page.



  1. The logo looks a bit odd here, make sure you use the .png file provided at http://brlcad.org/wiki/Logo

  2. The play button is big as compared to the rectangle behind it. So you can either reduce the size of play button or don't use a rectangular shape behind it.

  3. The font-size of BRL-CAD should be bolder and bigger. Also you can use a tagline "open source solid modelling" below it. See http://cpp-tricks.com/brlcad/ for inspiration

  4. The shadow or glow you added to buttons seems a bit odd. I suggest use simple buttons without any glow. You can choose colors from http://www.flatuicolorpicker.com/. Also reduce the font-size of text contained in buttons.

Thanks for your valuable efforts, all the changes I asked are done.


Just few more suggestions.



  1. Increase the width of Login button as per the size of username textbox and write Login in the center of button.

  2. Don't use Pinkish background for each menu, instead you can change the text color to same pink and use no background. Also some text is messing with icons, keep a consistent distance from icon in each menu item. And increase the font size of menu text.


If you need more time, simply ask, I will extend it.
