Design a set of visualization mode (wireframe/hidden/flat/translucent/opaque) icons #3BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 120 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: artwork, concept, design, icons

BRL-CAD is a 3D modeling system with a variety of ways to visualize geometry including default wireframes, hidden-line drawing, translucent shaded, and opaque shaded.  We need good application icons to indicate most of those methods.

Define a set of icons that we can use in our main GUI application (e.g., on a top toolbar). Submit the icons in a raw editable format (e.g., SVG, AI, PSD, or XCF) as well as an overview of them all in PNG format.

The icons should be scalable at least from 16x16 through 128x128 while maintaining a clean appearance.

Search the web for examples of what those different visualization modes look like.

Sean on January 16 2015 15:21 UTCI like it but...

These are looking fantastic Marc, but a few adjustments/issues noticed:

  • consistency -- the wireframe box is oriented differently from the other three but is conceptually the same thing

  • hidden doesn't mean the object is missing, it's more like this: http://www.progecad.us/index.pl?iid=20400

  • flat, translucent/transparent, and opaque are indeed all similar but flat is more like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shading (see the flat-shaded sphere on the right)

  • translucent is just what it sounds like, being able to see through the object(s) slightly: http://bluebeam.com/us/support/help/revu12/Content/RevuHelp/3D%20viewing/Geometry%20Render%20Modes.htm

  • what you have for opaque would work well for flat, and you can make opaque be something that represents a higher-resolution rendering (a ray trace rendering perhaps)

Marc Tannouson January 16 2015 16:51 UTCUpdate

Consistency - I want the icons to be different. Their concern is to tell the user what's going on. If everything looks too much alike, clarity is lost and defeats the purpose. Plus, that is a really nice angle to convey what wireframe is all about, showing all its sides.

Hidden - New icon uploaded.

Translucent/Transparent - A general consensus among users that have worked in graphic editing programs, the black/white tile symbolizes transparency and is easy to spot, I'd really like if I could stick to this one as I really thing it conveys the message clearly.

Flat - Swapping it with the current opaque would work, therefore I uploaded a new icon for opaque.

I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Regards,

Marc
