Design a BRL-CAD Sticker #14BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Sean, Mihai NeacsuTags: artwork, concept, photoshop, design, sticker

This task involves designing a BRL-CAD sticker. Make it look good, something you'd be proud to give to all of your friends and family, something you'd put on your laptop or phone case. Look over some great sticker designs before starting to work on this, including the other completed GCI sticker designs by others.

Simple is good. Using our formal (the three circles) or informal (moose antlers) logo is great. Please avoid any military theme (no tanks!), do not use our old eagle logo, but do put a dash in BRL-CAD. If you use the three circle gear logo, the centers should be white and it must be 300dpi high quality -- use one of the vector versions submitted as a GCI task here or search around for one.

There is no bound shape for the shape of the sticker. It can be rectangular, circular, or even irregular shaped. The only thing that matters is that it look really cool.

Submit your artwork in any file format, but with transparency or dimension settings so we can print them properly. (png, xcf, or psd work well). Give your name so we can credit you if you like as well and join our brlcad-news mailing list to hear if we use your sticker design.

Make it look awesome. LOOK at some of the completed ones and make yours look even better. :-)

We like it, that's pretty neat and clean!

I checked the .psd file and there is only a flatten layer. Can you post a .psd file that contains all the layers? Thank you!

Sean on December 11 2014 03:39 UTCsome technical issues

Luko, thank you for your efforts!  Here are some other technical issues I notice at a glance:

  • the oval is not centered and it gets cut off

  • the dash is missing

  • the open gray areas are imbalanced

That said, I think there is too much room for improvement here.  It's too simple.  Even without the technical issues, it's achieved by drawing an oval, pasting an image, and typing two strings in an image editing program.  Participants are expected to put several hours of thought and/or effort into the design tasks.  You may have, but I'm not seeing that level of effort.  The more simple the design, the more creative and careful the design elements need to be.

Please check out some of the other completed sticker designs for an idea of the quality expected.  When in doubt, you could always try to freehand draw a moose (our mascot).

Sean on December 11 2014 03:40 UTCnot in jest

Just wanted to clarify that the last point about the moose was not in jest!  We'll be adding several tasks for people to express their creativity and designs drawing moose. :)

Sean on December 11 2014 17:44 UTCplease re-read the response

ProgrammingLuko, please re-read the previous feedback. This design is still substantially simplistic.  I see you added the hyphen and dual-colored it, but the oval is still cut and the design imbalanced.  Adding a gradient didn't help the design.  Please review some of the completed tasks for creativity inspiration.  If you're set on trying to make an oval design work, you'll need to really polish every aspect of this work.  Ask yourself if that's a sticker you would expect to see from a company?  Do you see any ways to improve the design?  If not, then you should be researching and searching for more inspiration.  Good luck!
