Design a BRL-CAD splash screen #7BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Deepak, Daniel_RTags: image, GUI, 2D, design, graphics, logo, splash screenBeginner

BRL-CAD's new modeling interface, archer, displays a splash screen when you start the program.  This is what it currently looks like:

http://svn.code.sf.net/p/brlcad/code/brlcad/trunk/src/tclscripts/archer/images/aboutArcher.png

There are several problems with that image.  It uses our old logo.  It references the wrong website.  It has a massive pointless ""icon"".  It proclaim's archer being trademarked (distracting).

Your task is to design a completely new splash screen that has none of those problems, is visually interesting, optionally incorporates our new logo, and optionally references our main website (brlcad.org).

Check out some of the other design tasks for inspiration.  Make yours look even more impressive, artistically interesting. ;)

Submit your image in whatever raw working format you use (e.g., psd), preferably something with layers in case we need to change anything, but also submit a final png image as well.

I took a quick look at the website and then googled the company. I found the central icon on google then changed the color to match google's design outlines located at www.google.com/design. I chose to keep it simple so that the image itself would be easy to load and would not get in the way of loading the actual program. If you liked these designs, i would love to do more design challenges for you. i would also be interested in redesigning other things such as the webpage and/or any other graphics. if you really liked it i would even consider a complete graphic overhaul haha.

Thanks for the task,

Really nice thought you've put into your work, Jake!  Excellent citing of your resources and design rationale too.  I do like it.

That said, the two designs you show seem like they could be improved.  The first is imbalanced in two ways -- the text on the left and right of the logo don't match spatially, and the BRL is slightly creeping over the CAD text.

The second image is better balanced but feels thrown together like Archer and BRL and CAD are competing for attention.  One or the other should probably be more prominent.  I'm also not personally a fan of seeing BRL and CAD separated.  Several of us have tried many variations and sizes trying to inject the logo where the dash resides, and it usually gets downvoted.

Sounds good. I will space the first out and make the second a little easier on the eyes.

V1.1 will probably be uploaded in the next few hours.

I think i will also grab a higher resolution Icon. I found one thats 256 square pixels. That way the image can be scaled to fit on larger screens without showing off too many pixels

If you have a larger icon on hand, I would love to use it.

If by icon you meant by larger resolution BRL-CAD logo, then the this link may act helpful.

Hi,

I've finally completed the splash page design and for my idea for this design you can read the case study which I've added in the zip folder.

As for layers, I have used Paint.NET to create the design and there's a raw format for my design saved in .pdn format. I hope you love my idea for the design! Also, thanks for giving me this opportunity! :)

Hi Maitreya,

The way you presented your work in highly professional manner is totally awesome. I really liked reading your case study. Great efforts. However I have few suggestions that can further refine your design.

It would be good if you make stem of bulb and "+" sign visually more clear. I suggest to write the tag line so that people can easily understand the significance of icon. Further the tag line "Think. Invent. Create." is not the official one. It was introduced by one of GCI the students like you. We are good if you wish to stick with it or creates your own.

The splash screen looks almost empty. Try adding something in background or foreground. I would like to see "colored" version of your design.

BTW, it is not mandatory to provide case study and other details about the design. Just a raw file and some sample images to view are enough so you can utilize the time in just making a great design.

Good luck!

Sean on December 10 2014 05:40 UTCstunning thought provoking

Maitreya, it's not often we encounter someone like yourself that goes far above and beyond with a submission, but I think this one qualifies.  You basically just invented entirely new iconography for our archer application based off of a byline.  I LOVE IT!  Your attention to detail and careful use of subtle color differences is noted.

As for the design itself, I too agree that the + sign really gets lost/stretched and is a bit of a weak symbol for creation.  Maybe an = sign.  Then we'd be able to play with the concept of (brain) (lightbulb) (equal) (brl-cad logo)

How much time have you put into this work already?  If it's substantial, please let us create another task for you to continue this work, so that you get credit for the magnitude of your effort.  This is really nice creative work.  Thank you for sharing it with us!

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions! I am happy that you liked the project.

I too thought that it was weak in addressing the hidden meaning but as the time was running, I uploaded my work.

By the way, for the time being spend on this task was long. I started learning about BRL-CAD,  sketching icons and creating mock-ups when I claimed the task on  6 Dec and till then I worked a lot on creating the final 'think' icon and writing the case study for further presenting my ideas on this. So it almost took me three days to finish it up.

As the task is now marked as "NEEDSWORK" should I work further on it or is it completed for me?

Thanks!

Maitreya Vyason December 13 2014 07:13 UTCAddressing the feedback

Hi,

I have now addressed all the issues that we present in the old concept and incorporated all the feedback you guys gave. I hope it's perfect now. :)

Thanks!
