Design a new website landing page for BRL-CAD #4BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Daniel_R, Gauravjeet SinghTags: web, javascript, js, html, design, css

The website of BRL-CAD is undergoing significant changes. We have a design mockup at http://cpp-tricks.com/brlcad/ and http://beta.brlcad.org but there are various aspects that we know could use improvement. One of those is the main page that will be presented when someone goes to http://brlcad.org

This style guide can be use for consistency or you can try to impress us with something different: http://www.google-melange.com/gci/work/download/google/gci2013/5844328496758784?id=5649050225344512

Redesign the front page of our web site. The only requirement is to adhere to a consistent visual style and make it impressive. Be creative. The output should be 2 design files, one for large screen, and one for small screens (e.g., mobile). The format can be images or html/css/javascript mockup.

Submit your design in whatever raw editable format you used along with a screenshot in png format. Also submit a brief write-up (this can be a txt file upload or detailed in a comment) telling us why is it an improvement over existing design.

Wing-Hou Chanon December 6 2014 20:34 UTCSpecification Query #1

Howdy!

Just a query regarding a the specification.

"The output should be 2 design files, one for large screen, and one for small screens (e.g., mobile)."

I'd like to only output one HTML page, instead of one for large screens and one for small screens. To do this I will make the page responsive which has a vast amount of benefits.

Is this alright?

Howdy!

Just to let you know work can be found in a public GitHub repository. Here is the link: https://github.com/winghouchan/BRL-CAD-GCI

Wing-Hou Chanon December 6 2014 23:59 UTCSpecification Discussion

Heyo!

I've began setting up the necessary files I need and started brewing some coffee for the night! While I'm doing this I'd like to discuss some aspects of the project and get a better idea on what you'd like. I'm going to list some topics and describe some details below. Please comment on them! They will help me set goals on what to design and what content to input. Maybe it could be turned into a fully functioning site ;)

I just saw your comment now. Sorry for late response.

  • First of all it's fine to have one responsive page instead of different pages.

  • Secondly it's great seeing you using github for this. I really appreciate that.

  • Your specifications seem fine. Go for it.

  • I cloned your repo, and got a empty index.html file. So I got nothing to review, and you just have 14 hours left. Do you need more time ?

Wing-Hou Chanon December 10 2014 10:59 UTC

Thanks for the reply!

I may need more time, but I will push up all my work before the time is up, at around 17:00 (GMT +0).

I'm gathering image assets at the moment and that's being quite troublesome.

You don t need to worry if you don't finish in time. It's something we control entirely, and if you need more it will be extended with no issue.

Wing-Hou Chanon December 10 2014 22:41 UTCReady for review

The work on this task is ready to be reviewed.

Wing-Hou Chanon December 10 2014 23:08 UTCNotice

I haven't been able to find any of the images I'm looking for so at the moment all of the section backgrounds are just a bland #1a1a1a :(

Still looking for them in the meantime, but the site is complete enough for review and can be modified to include images later.

Wing-Hou Chanon December 10 2014 23:08 UTCWrite-Up

Forgot to do the write-up but will complete it tomorrow as I'm off for the night.
