Create a logo press kit #2BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Isaac Kamga, DeepakTags: artwork, logo, documentation, press, design

This task is a continuation of another logo edit+render task. Base your activity here on one of the completed tasks.

We need a final cohesive logo representation that we can use in our tools, give to press groups, and help to codify our image. We've done 90% of the effort already, but need your help putting on the finishing touches.

Search BRL-CAD's completed tasks in melange for "production-quality version of our logo" and download the submitted materials. Your task is to create many more sizes and versions of their final product with and without our title.

If you need to re-render a logo image yourself, you'll need to download and install BRL-CAD. See http://brlcad.org/wiki/Deuces#Getting_Started if you run into problems.

For this task, we want our logo depiction rendered into multiple sizes, colors, with and without our title. This is the bulk of the work expected:

Create or color-adjust renderings so that we have a suitable version in full color, grayscale, dichromatic (two colors + black and white), and black white.

Create versions with and without BRL-CAD added to the logo.

Create multiples sizes where the maximal width is the following pixel sizes: 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 1024, 2048.

Create all of them with transparent backgrounds (BRL-CAD defaults to 0/0/1, which helps selecting it in image-editing tools.

I would like to work on this task.

This task has been assigned to Marc Tannous. You have 100 hours to complete this task, good luck!

Marc Tannouson December 10 2014 18:57 UTCHow I did it

- Had to re-do the Archer step for a higher quality rt, encountered a lot of issues but finally made it. Wanted to have something in 3D as you already have a flat logo on www.brlcad.org/wiki/logo

- Literally created every single file by hand, this was the most repetitive task so far and least creative.

- At around 32x32 and 16x16 I attached no text versions because the text is unreadable.

Hope you like it,

Regards Marc

Ironically, the 16x16 version is one of the better looking favicons thus far.

Closed due to the level of effort, but I think more work is still needed (you're welcome to claim another press kit task).  Issues I see are:

  • mixing flat 2D "BRL-CAD" text with 3D rendering is visually disconcerting on all of the +text versions -- it almost works for blackwhite+text.png, but even there the links look distorted

  • would not worry about adding 2D text regardless (better handled by css) unless it overlaps / interacts with the logo in some way

  • the contrast difference on grayscale.png isn't big enough -- needed to tweak the colors on the model or in post-processing

  • we have press kit tasks because we're looking to replace the flat logo everyone has been using.  the model can be changed but we want the logo based in 3D (even if it's rendered as a simple flat 2D image), not just something sketched in an image editing program.

  • the sides are quite hidden in shadows as rendered.  it's a nice effect, but if not intended you'd probably have to change the ambient lighting level (-A...) or add some custom lights to the scene to fix that.

color.png looks great and easily reusable.
