CREATE A MOTION TYPOGRAPHY VIDEO FOR BRL-CAD #6BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 120 hrs Mentors: SeanTags:

BRL-CAD has a lot of great features that can be highlighted. A motion typography video highlighting these features would be a wonderful addition to the front page of website.

This task requires you to create a motion typography video that will convince user to give BRL-CAD a try, it could be titled something like ''x reasons to choose BRL-CAD'' or anything similar (give your creative minds a flight). The video should not be more than 2 minutes.

For inspiration about what a motion typography, see:

For some context, there is much background information on our website and some documentation materials such as:

  • http://brlcad.org/BRL-CAD_Priorities.png
  • http://brlcad.org/BRL-CAD_An_Open_Source_Perspective.pdf
  • http://brlcad.org/Industry_Diagram.pdf
  • http://brlcad.org/VolumeI-Overview.pdf

Submit an avi or online URL to your video, preferably one with and another without voice/sound. Be sure to check out any other completed GCI motion typography tasks for inspiration. Make yours even better. ;)

Smriti, thank you uploading your work, but this needs more work.  First, the task description asks you to submit an AVI or URL, not a WMV file.  Second, there are numerous typographical and timing errors in the video.  The intro title says "BRL-CAD" for maybe 50 milliseconds before transitioning.  Saying "more than million" is wrong grammar (missing an "a" article) as is "used thousand a times" -- please proof-read all the text.  The ending is abrupt with the music getting cut off and you don't cite/annotate the source of that music (which seems to be Dicorhombus, but you don't credit them anywhere).

On an artistic note, this is not very creative.  It's the same information one can get from the first page of the contributor's guide or even from our main website.  The video should provide information that is not so easily found.  That is why the task lists several sources of background information, so you can be more creative with the content you present.  Others have already done the "broad overview" of BRL-CAD and they're nearly all rather mediocre.  I suggest coming up with a different transcript and color scheme.

If you provide a transcript first, we can provide feedback before you spend time turning it into a video.

I noticed at least two issues:

  • The text is sometimes cropped or unreadable (how many lines of code?)

  • You use images which are probable copyright protected.

Mukul,

This is not a motion typography video but, of greater concern, is not really adding much value as a video.  The information you included is the details that are immediately encountered by anyone looking (so not useful) and you still include images that are probably copyright protected (if anything, you need to cite their source -- e.g., the library photo).

I suggest you taking a completely different approach.  Maybe look through our image gallery (brlcad.org/gallery) and find 10 or so of the more impressive looking images, and make a video that highlights unique features of those renderings (which means you'd need to select images that are different in some fashion).
