Design a BRL-CAD splash screen #15BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Kesha Shah, Ch3ckTags: image, GUI, 2D, design, graphics, logo, splash screenBeginner

BRL-CAD's new modeling interface, archer, displays a splash screen when you start the program.  This is what it currently looks like:

http://svn.code.sf.net/p/brlcad/code/brlcad/trunk/src/tclscripts/archer/images/aboutArcher.png

There are several problems with that image.  It uses our old logo.  It references the wrong website.  It has a massive pointless ""icon"".  It proclaim's archer being trademarked (distracting).

Your task is to design a completely new splash screen that has none of those problems, is visually interesting, optionally incorporates our new logo, and optionally references our main website (brlcad.org).

Check out some of the other design tasks for inspiration.  Make yours look even more impressive, artistically interesting. ;)

Submit your image in whatever raw working format you use (e.g., psd), preferably something with layers in case we need to change anything, but also submit a final png image as well.

Youlian, reviews can take up to 24 hours (which is apparently how long this one took), and are not an indicator of problems.  If anything, they merely indicate how busy we are reviewing tasks.. ;)

That said, this is an interesting design but there are a few technical issues:

  • our logo has warts?  see http://brlcad.org/wiki/Logo for a more up-to-date version.

  • BRL-EAD??  there seem to be black splotches on all but the letter L.  the one on the C is the worst, making it look like an E, but they are on all the letters.

  • the angle of the objects on the table does not match the angle of the table.  this makes it look very unrealistic.

  • inconsistent shadows, also affecting realism.

There are other issues, but those are the major ones.  Please fix at least the first two. :)

Hi,

I have looked through your comments and refined some of the problems you have pointed out:

  • Logo: I have cleared the warts on the logo.

  • Black Spots: Those black spots are shadow created by photoshop when I extrude them from 2D to 3D. I tried to remove those black spots manually but it looks very weird.

  • Angle of object: I have adjusted The angle of the table to fit the angle of the objects, hopefully it looks more realistic now. ( I have added a ruler as I felt that the table is quite plain after the readjustment)

  • Inconsistent shadows: The shadows are inconsistent as they receive light source from different angles, when I readjust them all to one direction it looks weird too. See file : Shadow Explanation for why I have done the shadow in such manner. I agree that there is some problem with the compass but it again looks weird when I adjusted the shadow of the compass ( See file : Compass Shadow Adjusted). Hence I have created another file without compass and ruler. ( See file : No Compass and ruler)

While playing with the files and objects. I realise that the splash art looks quite cool without the table or even without the background. Hence I have also uploaded a file without table and without background (See File : No Table No Background). Hopefully the splash art is better now :D.
