Animate our logo! #11BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Popescu Andrei, IshwerdasTags: animation, 2D, logo, design, graphics

We have a logo inspired by interlocked nodes (like a bike chain). We'd like to see some concepts of how it might be animated. Use your creativity and make something we can either use on our website, or maybe even use as a "loading..." or progress bar animation.

Create 2D or 3D animated version of our logo. Submit an animated gif preview as well as any high-resolution raw working files you used (e.g., xcf/psd layers, individual frames, etc).

Do not just scale and/or spin an image around. Put some creative thought into how the animation might be used. Be creative, make it aesthetically pleasing.

Hey this is a nice animation, I would like to know how are you making it. Like what software packages are used for such animation. Also please upload raw files too.

I used powerpoint to animate the bits, then rendered it as an mp4. I uploaded that mp4 and got a gif. There were no original files as such since it was an animation. Would you have suggestions on how to improve it?

Ko0lGuYon January 14 2015 05:26 UTCUploaded

I have uploaded the powerpoint and mp4 video. Please take a look.

Sean on January 14 2015 05:31 UTCwhat is BRL

So Ko0lGuY, this is pretty fun, interesting, and unexpected.  However, I'm wondering why you stopped at "BRL-"?  Our trademark is "BRL-CAD" and truncations of that don't fit with our marketing.  Can you add CAD to the mix and/or find some other way to keep our trademark intact?

Also, where do you see this being useful?  It's nice to have some thought into where you were thinking this could be useful.

Sean on January 14 2015 05:32 UTCwhat did you make the animation with?

I see your mp4 and ppt, but they leave me wondering what you actually used to construct the animation.  Details please.

Ko0lGuYon January 14 2015 05:39 UTCEdits

Thank you for your suggestion I will add CAD in there. I used the animate tools in powerpoint to move and rotate the parts. You can go to the animation tab and click animation pane to get a look at the animations being done. So here are the steps I went through:

  1. Get Logo off Google Images

  2. Split logo into two parts (the black and the red)

  3. Animating each part separately, duplicating them as necessary. I specifically used the spin and motion animations to rotate and move the two parts.

  4. Saved the PPT as an mp4 (Save As - MP4)

  5. Went to http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-gif

  6. Uploaded the mp4 and got a gif.

Ko0lGuYon January 14 2015 06:54 UTC2nd Version

The 2nd Version is up and includes the "CAD". I do apologize for not putting it in the first place. As for uses, I was thinking maybe on a website or blog title. It could also be a video intro (sped up?).

Writing BRL-CAD with BRL-CAD logo's is a clever and unique idea, I haven't seen it so far. Congratulations for that ! It really looks awesome, but the only thing I would change is how you model the "D" from CAD. You could make it as two separate black parts on the left, connected to a pink part on the right, sort of like a  mirrored B

Good luck ! You've done awesome so far :)

Thank you for the suggestion. The "backward B" approach looks rather weird. I suggest adding a backbone as i have done here: http://imgur.com/nns7p53

Sure thing, I was just trying to give you a starting point, not a forced guideline. Feel free to do as you please, the more creative you are, the better ! :)
