Design a BRL-CAD Sticker #7BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Harmanpreet, IshwerdasTags: artwork, concept, photoshop, design, sticker

This task involves designing a BRL-CAD sticker. Make it look good, something you'd be proud to give to all of your friends and family, something you'd put on your laptop or phone case. Look over some great sticker designs before starting to work on this, including the other completed GCI sticker designs by others.

Simple is good. Using our formal (the three circles) or informal (moose antlers) logo is great. Please avoid any military theme (no tanks!), do not use our old eagle logo, but do put a dash in BRL-CAD. If you use the three circle gear logo, the centers should be white and it must be 300dpi high quality -- use one of the vector versions submitted as a GCI task here or search around for one.

There is no bound shape for the shape of the sticker. It can be rectangular, circular, or even irregular shaped. The only thing that matters is that it look really cool.

Submit your artwork in any file format, but with transparency or dimension settings so we can print them properly. (png, xcf, or psd work well). Give your name so we can credit you if you like as well and join our brlcad-news mailing list to hear if we use your sticker design.

Make it look awesome. LOOK at some of the completed ones and make yours look even better. :-)

Ivo Valchevon December 1 2014 18:03 UTCFeedback

I've just uploaded a file called "sticker.png". Could my mentors give me some feedback? Thank you in advance!

Sean on December 1 2014 18:13 UTCmark as complete for review

Especially these first few days, feedback will be difficult unless you mark a task as completed.  That said, I reviewed and sorry to say that I'm not loving it.. :(

Here's what our current stickers look like: http://www.stickermule.com/marketplace/search?q=brl-cad

Some feedback: separating the BRL from the CAD seems like a difficult design, we standardize on the US spelling of words (you used British English spelling on modeling and defense), and we like to distance our open source project from our 'defence' heritage.

I've marked it as complete as you Sean said in order to be reviewed :)

Feedback:

1) translucent backgrounds (the drop shadows) can't be used with stickers.  you can have transparency but that indicates where the sticker is cut (and there can only be one cut, so having separate text also won't work).  you could fix this by applying a background color, but that implies you want a square or other sticker shape.

2) the font on BRL-CAD is overly ornate, the other fonts are too informal.  picking a good looking font can be tricky. I suggest searching the web for different open source fonts. ;)

3) the image is highly aliased (lots of jaggies and artifacts).  your submission should be a high-quality image (e.g., 300+dpi) in a raw editable format (e.g., photoshop psd or gimp xcf format).

 Hi Ivo,

It's good that you marked your work to be reviewed but you must also work on Sean's feedback in order to get your work accepted. Make your sticker more cleaner and appealing. Just have look at other designs at: http://www.stickermule.com/marketplace/search?q=brl-cad and compare your design with them and figure out what makes those looks better than yours.

Make it more attractive, give it a modern look. At present it lacks freshness and creativity. For the fonts, you can use the Google fonts: https://www.google.com/fonts

You can also have a look at some beautiful designs over the Internet and makes yours the best one. Good luck!
