Design a prototype CAD GUI layout #4BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Hardeep Singh Rai, Ch3ckTags: graphic art, prototype, photoshop, interface, design

BRL-CAD's usability is notoriously complex and ''expert friendly''. MGED and Archer are the main geometry editors, with drastically different user interfaces.

This task involves evaluating the features provided by MGED and Archer, then designing a new GUI layout that encompasses their features while improving usability. Rationale for design decisions and layout should be provided.

Dear Mentors,

I have finished my works. Both are .png files and one is the prototype mockup for Windows while the other is the prototype mockup for Mac OS X.

Thank You.

Zenon, this looks interesting!  Can you explain your design a bit in more detail?  Some questions come to mind like what toggling mged mode is supposed to mean, what the command you wrote in the command window is supposed to have done, and why labels and icons are mixed on the second row.

Is the Console bar at the bottom supposed to be an input field or simply reflect status?  It visually matches the Help input and V1/V2 text input fields, but seems like it's supposed to be read-only reflecting status.  If that's true, it should change to not look like the others.

Zenonon December 31 2014 10:44 UTCExplanations and changes

Dear Mentors,

I am happy to explain your queries. My design focuses on linking the two editors by allowing one of them to change the other or show changes of the other. An example will be the MGED window command which I meant to be a command that changes the attribute of the object, while at the same time changing the objects' attributes in Archer. The code points to the object which could be seen from the hierarchy window: black circle and sets Vector 1 of its attribute to 3.1415

Toggling MGED will close or open the MGED window, whereas I would make changes to the second row by changing the icons to labels instead in order to make them fit together. I would also make changes to the Console bar at the bottom which is indeed supposed to be Read-Only.

Do ask me for any inquiries that you have. I will be happy to explain them.

Thank you and Happy New Year.

Regards,

Zenon

Hey zenon, I really liked your design, just upload the original raw files, then I can mark this task as complete.

Thanks !

Gauravjeet Singh on January 3 2015 10:20 UTCWrong files

I guess you uploaded wrong files. In Code In Official Updated.zip there are some png files and pptx file. With raw files I meant the original software files. for example if you used gimp then upload the .xcf file or if used photoshop then upload the .psd file of your design.

Zenonon January 3 2015 12:18 UTCRe: Wrong Files

Dear Mentors,

I have used PowerPoint for the image editing as I was unable to use either Gimp or Photoshop on my computer. I had saved the files by saving the PowerPoint as image .PNG files. Was I not allowed to use PowerPoint?

Thank you and Sorry for any inconveniences.

I was of the impression you were to design the new interface using Photoshop and submit the raw design files(.xcf or any other) which could later on be used to improve upon. Looking at the powerpoint files I don't see how useful they will become beyond this exercise. Please try to work on this using Photoshop and submit the .xcf files for your design.

The work looks great! just see what you can do :)

Thanks,
