Design a front cover of Doc Camp Book #2BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete:
72 hrs
Mentors: Sean
BRL-CAD was selected to participate in the 2013 Google Summer of Code Doc Camp. A team of contributors got together in California, brainstormed, and wrote an entire book for BRL-CAD in just a few days. They created a guide for contributing to BRL-CAD.
You have to design a front cover of Doc Camp Book. Use your creativity and make impressive design.

Submit your original raw artwork files (preferably with layers so we can edit the content if we need to). You can use any software or tools you want to, including pen and paper or paint!
Be inspired, be awesome. See some of the other completed GCI design tasks for inspiration, but provide an original design.

I would like to work on this task.
This task has been assigned to Marie Gita. You have 72 hours to complete this task, good luck!

Well it's nice design. But can we use that clipart image. I mean that image should have a redistribution license. Try to search for creative commons licensed image. Please mention the source of that clipart.
If that clipart is under redistribution license then I would love to give few suggestions
First of all the clipart doesn't seems to be a part of the design, as the background behind clipart is white but our cover doesn't have white background, So change the background of cover to white, or try to find a clipart with transparent backgroud (most probably it would be in png or gif format)
I seriously loved the font you used for "a contributor's guide", can you mention it here.
To make this an excellent design, I expect few tweaks in the layout. These are
Use BRL-CAD logo on the top of design. Beneath it continues "a contributers design" See if it looks good in single line.
Place the clipart image on the bottom-left corner of design with his hands pointing to BRL-CAD text.
In BRL-CAD text change the BRL to the shade of red used in the logo.
That's it, these tweaks would make it a great design.
Best of luck

Hi,
The old clipart did not have a redistribution liscence so I found a new image from 'pixabay.com' that allows me to use the image freely for any purpose;
source:: http://pixabay.com/en/man-guy-person-cartoon-binoculars-40094/
the font i used for 'a contributor's guide' is 'Script MT Bold, Bold', (I thought it was cool too :) )
I could not find a BRL-CAD logo with a transparent background, so I had to make the cover white,
I hope the new design is good
Thank you.

This design is for sure better. Good work :)
Regarding logo: Get a transparent logo from: http://www.google-melange.com/gci/task/view/google/gci2013/6180749191413760
Just a little more and I would be able to mark this task as complete.
Use a light shade of grey as background of cover, it won't ruin design if you are using the logo mentioned in above link. And change the background of part written "a contibuter's guide" to shade of red used in logo.
Also you can emphaize the logo by using a white colored circle behind the logo.
And upload the png images of your work too, so that others can also see your work.

I tried two different designs and uploaded them as brlcadcoverI and brlcadcoverII
thank you

Marie,
This is a nice design but I have a few questions and suggestions. First and foremost, where is the image of the person with the binoculars from? Did you draw that? I'm also not sure how that pertains to contributing or CAD. Would you explain your rationale?
Next is the updated logo. You totally mangled it...! :) It looks like you probably tried to copy-paste the logo into your design and you attempted to "fix it" after also copying the "checkerboard" pattern.
The problem is how you copy-pasted the logo, you didn't do it right.. :)
Select-all in gimp, copy, go to your image, paste. Don't do a screen capture or window capture or anything like that. Use gimp to copy between the one with the transparent background and your work. If you do it right, there will not be a checker pattern.
A few other changes to request and one comment:
Remember, just like you've learned in school, you must always "cite your sources" if you didn't create that binocular clipart binocular guy.

Hi,
I made the changes to my design and included an my citations and explanation (of the image) in a separate document. I hope it is okay :)
Marie, thank you for the detailed response. That looks like it'll work. Might I ask for just one more exploratory revision, using your design. I'd like to see what this image would look like on the cover instead of the binoculars guy:
http://openclipart.org/detail/121045/moose-by-papapishu
Perhaps flip the moose image horizontally so he's facing the right? A moose is our official "mascot", based on how the original author's name is pronounced.
Thank you again for all your efforts. This will be the last revision as you've completed enough work to call this task complete. If you're willing to accommodate this last request, that would be appreciated.
The deadline of the task has been extended with 1 days and 0 hours.
Congratulations, this task has been completed successfully.
If you're interested in accommodating that request, here's a separate task you can claim:
