Design a BRL-CAD Sticker #2BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: design, artwork, concept, photoshop, sticker

This task involves designing a BRL-CAD sticker. Make it look good, something you'd be proud to give to all of your friends and family. Look over some great sticker designs before starting to work on this.  Simple is good.  Using our formal (the three circles) or informal (moose antlers) logo is great.  Please avoid any military theme (no tanks!).

There is no bound shape for the shape of the sticker.  It can be rectangular, circular, or even irregular shaped.  The only thing that matters is that it look really cool.

Submit your artwork in any file format, but ideally with transparency settings so we can print them properly.  (png or psd work well).  Give you name so we can credit you if you like as well.

Oleg,

Per our project guidelines, our official name is "BRL-CAD" and it's to be treated as a proper noun.  Your design emphasizes our trademark as two separate terms, when they should be one, and the dash is missing.  Could you try a diferent design that keeps the word together as one and retains the dash?

As per a sticker design, try to keep the colors to a minimum as well.  Most sticker printers are only able to print a limited number of colors at a time and they become more expensive the more colors there are.  There's not a limit so you can keep it colorful, but if you're going to design a sticker we might print, you'll want to limit the colors to just a handful (say less than 16 colors).

Hi Oleg

Thanks for following Sean's instructions by keeping the word together and including dash. But as suggested by him, you need to keep minimum colors, one suggestion could be those of our logo(s) and any one or two other for better colour scheme.

Only writing "BRL-CAD" on sticker will not be enough, we also need a brief description about what BRL-CAD is and what it does. This description can only be a single line. Further we can also include BRL-CAD's website.

Keep going and best of luck!

I'm sorry, I can not create it with sixteen colors.

Stop. I can try to do it again, but in a style of vector graphics. Raster beautiful, but since you only need 16 colors ...

Sean on November 24 2013 03:43 UTCyour comment on IRC

Oleg,

Your comments on IRC, while you claimed as being respectful, are disrespectful to the spirit of GCI and open source participation.  My perception is that you have some expectation that needs to be adjusted.  I understand your excitement and frustration, but your impatience does not place your tasks in priority over other tasks.  ALL tasks are reviewed, commented on, and discussed in the order in which they are submitted throughout the day, every day.

So far, we've responded to every single comment and submission in less than 24 hours, most within just a few hours or even minutes.

This is ultimately a contest with several dozen participants involved on any given day.  We strive to be fair and responsive to the efforts of ALL participants equally and reasonably, within capacity and time constraints.  This will mean that tasks may at times be processed a little more slowly in the first few days because there is just so much activity by so many people.  As things slow down, you'll find responses coming back more quickly and more time for interactive discussion on IRC, especially if you're one of our finalists.

It has nothing to do with not appreciating your time and effort in the least.

Your claim on IRC that we're not respecting your time was indeed rather offensive.  Open source participation is predominantly volunteer effort.  Moreover, we're actually not participating in GCI to have you do work for us.  We're here to help introduce you and others to open source software development.

Open source is all about communication.

If you have aspirations for doing more work under GCI, we can certainly talk about that and keep you busy as much as you like.  Our winning participant last year completed nearly 50 tasks before GCI was over not just because his work was outstanding but he was exceptionally good at communicating with our development team.  We kept him busy with tasks day and night, several per day most days, and now he's an official BRL-CAD developer.

Understanding the nuances of your participation, the impact of your work, and the effects of your communications wil help you become an effective open source contributor.  The better you communicate, the better you will do in GCI.

We can discuss this further on IRC, publicly or in private, if you so desire.

Olegon November 24 2013 11:26 UTC

Yes, Sean, I understood. Excuse me, if forced to think that I do not respect you. I have often notices that mentors, as I - volunteers.

I really want to become a finalist is from this organization. I want to help you day and night, and that's why I was sad because of some slowness in consideration of my work.

I chose BRL-Cad, though was strong in KDE.

I chose BRL-Cad, though could help greatly to Wikimedia.

All because of my desire to help opensource equals my desire to win the competition. Because of this I have come into this organization.

Sean on December 30 2013 05:01 UTCGCI update

Oleg, want to let you know that you are just one task shy of getting a t-shirt from Google for having completed three BRL-CAD tasks.  (If you completed tasks for other orgs, you'll also qualify.)  Thank you for your efforts!

No hard feelings on the communication issues earlier and I do hope you continue to be interested in open source.  GCI is a fantastic introduction.  With just a week left, you certainly have enough time remaining to reach our top-five if you are so inclined.  Best of luck!
