Design a BRL-CAD Sticker #3BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: design, artwork, concept, photoshop, sticker

This task involves designing a BRL-CAD sticker. Make it look good, something you'd be proud to give to all of your friends and family. Look over some great sticker designs before starting to work on this.  Simple is good.  Using our formal (the three circles) or informal (moose antlers) logo is great.  Please avoid any military theme (no tanks!).

There is no bound shape for the shape of the sticker.  It can be rectangular, circular, or even irregular shaped.  The only thing that matters is that it look really cool.

Submit your artwork in any file format, but ideally with transparency settings so we can print them properly.  (png or psd work well).  Give you name so we can credit you if you like as well.

I. S. Ranjith,
A good start, but you should probably modify the design such that its clear that the sticker is of BRL-CAD only. Looking at your sticker, anyone shouldn't have a question "What is this sticker about? Which open source organization (if any) it belongs to". Check the logo references in task above to get good pointers.

Sean on November 24 2013 06:01 UTCwhat?

Ranjith,

Tasks are reviewed in the order they are received daily and through the day so you just have to be patient.  That said, I'm not seeing how this is a sticker design...

Where are the boundaries of the sticker?  What is that "color ball" even supposed to be?  Just slapping our informal mascot antlers and the word BRL-CAD on it doesn't make for a good sticker. It needs to make sense, be simple, be artistic, be relevant, etc.

Sean on November 25 2013 04:38 UTCno relation to CAD

What does blasting off have to do with BRL-CAD or CAD or graphics or anything really.  It looks like you found an image of a sticker that already said that, and you added the BRL-CAD informal antlers.  This won't do.  Did you look at the example URL in my previous comment?

We're expecting something simple but artistic, identifying with BRL-CAD.  Similar to these:

Sean on November 27 2013 07:33 UTCbetter!

This is a lot better Ranjith!  Few minor edits and I think we can call this done:

  • make the BRL-CAD text bigger, about 30%.  maybe make the logo about 5% smaller.  no sense leaving so much empty space on the sides.

  • byline is just "Open Source Solid Modeling".  note the U.S. spelling of Modeling and eliminate the defence line.  you can put "open source" and "solid modeling" on separate lines if it helps fill the circle.

  • suggest eliminating the italics on the byline.

  • suggest changing the color of "BRL-CAD" to black or white, and perhaps thicken the exterior red border slightly (double thick?).

Since this is close to complete, please submit two or three different fonts for the BRL-CAD text.  That is: zipfile with 3 different images, same exact design, just using different fonts in each image -- three of your favorites.  Also include the psd like you did -- that was perfect.

Sean on November 28 2013 07:37 UTCfonts!

I cannot believe you actually used comic sans... that's a terrible font!

Your task is complete, but would you submit 2-3 alternative font designs and use something other than Comic Sans... it needs to work well with the 'BRL-CAD' font.  The other two main logo fonts you used were not interesting, I'd stay away from them too.

BUT I do like the overall design and balance now.  It works and we can nitpick a better font later if your next 2-3 aren't any better.

Also, please provide your full name so we may credit you accordingly when/if we print some stickers out (e-mail me your mailing address and I'll send you some).  You may also want to join the brlcad-news mailing list to keep in touch and be aware of them getting put to use.

Thanks for your efforts!

Sean on November 30 2013 05:58 UTCnicely done

Ranjith, very nice work iterating on numerous design concepts and coming up with some final solutions that we should be able to work with.

You'll be credited as "Ranjith, I.S." in our contributor documentation if your work is used, but forgive me if I don't believe you that they don't stand for "something" :)  I know too many people from foreign countries to believe that.  If someone had asked me to guess, I would have said Inderpreet Singh Ranjith, but it really does not matter.  You can be credited as "Q42 Ranjith" for all we care -- so long as we can credit you appropriately, unoffensively, and unambiguously for your efforts. ;)

I.S.Ranjithon November 30 2013 07:50 UTCMy Name

Sir

Actually the 'S'  in "I. S. " stands for my father's name but  'I' was added to give power to my name according to numerology.

So, you were not wrong but I would be very grateful to you if you credit meas "Ranjith, I.S." in contributor documentation if my work is used.

Thank You Sir for approving my task as well.

Regards

I. S. Ranjith
