Create a Motion Typography video for BRL-CAD #3BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: design, graphics, 2D, video, motion typography

BRL-CAD has a lot of great features that can be highlighted. A motion typography video highlighting these features would be a wonderful addition to the front page of website.

This task requires you to create a motion typography video that will convince user to give BRL-CAD a try, it could be titled something like ''x reasons to choose BRL-CAD'' or anything similar (give your creative minds a flight). The video should not be more than 2 minutes.

For inspiration about what a motion typography, see:

For some context, there is much background information on our website and some documentation materials such as:

  • http://brlcad.org/BRL-CAD_Priorities.png
  • http://brlcad.org/BRL-CAD_An_Open_Source_Perspective.pdf
  • http://brlcad.org/Industry_Diagram.pdf
  • http://brlcad.org/VolumeI-Overview.pdf

Submit an avi or online URL to your video, preferably one with and another without voice/sound.  Be sure to check out any other completed GCI motion typography tasks for inspiration.  Make yours even better. ;)

The script needs a little refinement before you render to video.  I suggest arranging the highlights so they tell a cohesive story or logically group together in some manner.  Right now it's just a megalist of some 20+ interesting points, which is far too many for anyone to remember by the time they get to the end.

Perhaps try prioritizing them (to you, what sounds most interesting/impressive?).

I would ditch the subatomic to galactic bullet.  Saying we support a log of geometry file formats is meaningless unless you plan on splattering many/most/all of the formats into the video somehow.

Also, you mix development merits with user merits.  Who is your audience.  You should probably focus on one or the other.  If it's developers/contributors, we have more than a million lines of C/C++ code, not half.  Also, BRL-CAD is not easy to use or learn.

Anita Leungon December 31 2013 06:56 UTCSorry!

I keep claiming and unclaiming the task.. but I actually am rendering the video right now however I want to do something different before I turn it in.

I submitted the one with the original script and the reedited script. It's also my first time working with Sony Vegas, so please be kind. It also takes really, really long to complete one of these do to the excessive tweaking.

Sean on January 1 2014 18:29 UTCawesome

Anita, this is looking just spectacular.  This is great.  I'm a bit town between the two videos you made, though, as both have aspects I love and ..don't love. :)

In all, I think your first video flows much better while the second video tells a better story.  Can you try to merge the two concepts?

Here's some feedback for all th 11+7 points that should help you merge a final:

  • typo1.1: good, simple opening

  • typo1.2: excellent, the OS icons are a nice change

  • typo1.3: good, nice perspective

  • typo1.4: fantastic, this should be at strong point like maybe the last point

  • typo1.5: I like it, but it's an argumentative point .. weak -- drop it

  • typo1.6: like it

  • typo1.7: okay point, not strong or weak (can take it, leave it, or merge it (e.g., with #10)

  • typo1.8: good point, not strong or weak (can take it, leave it, or merge it (e.g., with #10)

  • typo1.9: like the point, but a little too much text and should say C/C++, bottom to top is awkward

  • typo1.10: nice transitions, would be cool to speed up with more and more features

  • typo1.11: just not true, drop this one! :)

  • ...

  • typo2.1: very nice complexity intro, good point

  • typo2.2: bottom to top is awkward, but great strong point, should say C/C++

  • typo2.3: don't like, typo1.4 is much better

  • typo2.4: like it except for the "don't worry", good point about impact

  • typo2.5: excellent point, maybe a good intro point

  • typo2.6: love it

  • typo2.7: love it

The music is nice -- where is that from?  Could be sped up just 5-10% for some of the transitions, but love the overall style and feel.  I like the style and emphasis of the second one more, but there are some portions in the first that are better.  Can you try a merge?  Feel free to submit a transcript only and we can post another typography task to render the final video.

The song is called Gathering by Keith Kenniff. I mainly took the second version and modified it, but I also tried my best to merge but also keep the video based on development merits (so things about wide range of os, fastest raytracer, what it's used for --  I see them as things users would be attracted to so I didn't include them). I also sped up some of the transitions. What do you think?
