Create prototype 2D DrawingBRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: SeanTags:

BRL-CAD provides limited services for drafting features including the production of 2D CAD drawings (blueprints).

This task involves designing a 2D CAD drawing prototype. The prototype MUST capture a set of design requirements and follows industry conventions.

If you've never seen a real blueprint drawing before, then this task might be too hard for you. Your result needs to refer to ISO 128 and/or ASME Y14.41 or other standard drawing elements.

Basically, identifying a style of drawing that we should support including pointing out the critical elements to be included on each drawing, their location, size, placement, etc.

Sean on January 3 2014 03:36 UTCnot the right task

Ilkin, what you submitted has nothing to do with the task description.  Did you look at the numerous references?  Did you do a web search?

If I put a basic image search into Google, I get more relevant results on the kind of information that is expected:

The task is not to design an application interface.  The task is to design a blueprint layout (which are called "drawings" in CAD terms).

Sean on January 3 2014 14:18 UTCmuch better

This is much better but your prototype looks incomplete. What are all of those little boxes for?  That goes into each of the "info block" rectangles?  What goes into the various big empty rectangles?

You have the right notion, but this entire task is to design that layout with specificity.  Please re-review the references provided as there are standard sections and standard information that should be included as well.  Your text explanation looks like you just copied some words you found in blueprints you found on the web.  Not all that you'll find is relevant to BRL-CAD or solid modeling, but you have to understand what those fields are to know which to remove.

Sean on January 3 2014 15:08 UTCokay to worse?

Ilkin, your design is digressing.  What is effectivity?  What is "designed data"?  Not sure what would go into that column or why we're tracking dates with it.  Why is the title block smaller than the other three boxes below it?

This really feels like you're just putting boxes into a spreadsheet and typing in words.  Please review the references provided and read about them.  This is expected to take you a few hours to understand what to put and what not to put into the prototype.

Sean on January 3 2014 21:23 UTCbranding and example

Ilkin, this is getting a little better but I don't think there's enough time to achieve the task objectives at this pace using ASME Y14.41 and/or ISO128 references.  You've put good effort in, but you missing some background. I suggest a compromise on the goals that we might be able to at least showcase for discussion.  Three things remaining:

  1. add some small BRL-CAD-specific branding to the design. this can be a simple "created by BRL-CAD" with our logo somewhere on the sheet out of the way.  it's not ceter to the design, so it shouldn't be very imposing.

  2. create an actual example (a fake one) with actual drawings and data filled in on the sheet as if it were output from BRL-CAD.  it should depict an actual 3D model like the blueprint google search I gave you earlier. submit this as another page in the pdf in *addition* to the prototype and descripiton page.

  3. provide your raw working files in addition to the pdf.  Whether you used word or photoshop or excel or whatever you used, submit those editable files.
