Design new Archer splash screenBRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: H S RaiTags: design, graphics, 2D, GUI, splash screen, image, logo

BRL-CAD's new modeling interface, archer, displays a splash screen when you start the program.  This is what it currently looks like:

About Archer image

http://svn.code.sf.net/p/brlcad/code/brlcad/trunk/src/tclscripts/archer/images/aboutArcher.png

There are several problems with that image.  It uses our old logo.  It references the wrong website.  It has a massive pointless "icon".  It proclaim's archer being trademarked.

Your task is to design a completely new splash screen that has none of those problems, is visually interesting, incorporates our new logo, and references are main website (brlcad.org).

Check out some of the other design tasks for inspiration, but be innovative.  Make it look impressive, artistically interesting. ;)

Submit your image in whatever raw working format you use (e.g., psd), preferably something with layers in case we need to change anything, but also submit a final png image as well.

I would like to work on this task.

Sean on December 19 2013 07:43 UTCany size

Any size is fine, but a size close to the existing splash screen is a safe idea.

As for this design, I think it needs more work; perhaps even a different approach altogether.  You blurred one of our renderings, added a lens flare (straight out of 1995), and added some hard-to-read text (due to the busy background).  That doesn't feel artistically inspired to me.

As noted in the task description, you design should incorporate our new logo and "be impressive". See some of our other completed design tasks for inspiration or to appreciate what it takes to complete a design task successfully.

This is definitely better, but there are several issues.  Please re-read the task description, particularly this section:

"There are several problems with that image.  It uses our old logo.  It references the wrong website.  It has a massive pointless "icon".  It proclaim's archer being trademarked."

Those are all things that are bad about the existing, and several of those issues you replicate in your design.

  • The eagle logo should not be incorporated.

  • TM is wrong.

  • You inexplicably left white sections in the word elevation and removed azimuth and twist??

  • AN OPEN, not A OPEN.

  • brlcad.org, not brl-cad.org

Sean on December 20 2013 06:04 UTCmuch better

This is looking much better.  The only issue is that the black in the diagram is not legible on that dark gray background.  Perhaps have a arc or pattern running through the background, or some semi-transparent zoomed-in visual (like part of a rendering or model).  Something to lighten the area underneath the diagram text while remaining not the focus.

Some ideas for inspiration: http://www.google.com/search?q=background+patterntbm=isch

Note how some use waves/arcs or luminosity gradients.

Also note that any background you *find* must be explicitly CC-BY or public domain license, or you have to create something original (recommended).

Sean on December 21 2013 10:41 UTCimage source?

Where's that background image from?  We must have redistribution and use rights (i.e., what's the license?).

Also, you still have dark text on a dark background, which is hard to read in places.  You could try adding an intensity gradient so that the checker underneath the image is lighter than the rest.  Or you could make the labels white (if they can be replaced/updated easily) or a different background altogether that doesn't have that problem.

Ilkin,

The site you documented is not the author (see the line right at the bottom of the page) and doesn't describe any legal informaiton (other than to say it's not their file).

Please find the original author or go with a different background where the lidense is prominent.

erikg on December 22 2013 14:10 UTCminor tweaks to consider

Hiya, looks pretty good, wondering if a few minor tweaks might improve it a bit...

  • "upon" feels wrong there, perhaps "on", "using" or "with" would be better?

  • the large "ARCHER" text seems a bit skinny, maybe a little more "bold" might help?

  • the black text and logo piece seem lost on the dark background, perhaps a mild grey edge on one side to give a bevelled appearance will help bring them out? or manipulate the background image to be lighter where black elements are?

  • the verticle white bar on the upper left corner... the bottom should probably be aligned with the bottom of the text "AN OPEN SOURCE ..."

  • having the top of the BRL-CAD logo touch the horizontal white line makes it feel pinched in that corner. I wonder if it would feel more balanced if the center image were shift right and up a little and the horizontal seperator moved up a little?

  • I kinda feel like the top left 'ARCHER' block should have an equal distance between the top of the block and the top of the image as from the left of the block and the left of the image (so a line from the top left corner to the top left of the block would be 45 degrees)

  • rar? really? zip, tar.gz or tar.bz would make it far more accessible (I had to install software just to extract, uncool)

I'm no artist or designer, so these are just a laymans observations/comments and not instructions *shrug* :)

Again, you have dark text on a dark background that cannot be easily read...  You also have the black of our logo against a nearly black background.

Either all the text should be white like your ARCHER text and byline, or all the next needs to be dark and the background gets made lighter.

Otherwise, I'm not sure the "rainbow of colors" serves any useful purpose.  It certainly doesn't have any releation to CAD.  If you're going to go with an abstract design, I suggest at least using simple geoemtric shapes with soft colors.

Thank you for your efforts, Ilkin.  Each iteration you got a little bit better, so I encourage you to keep trying different ideas and to keep improving your skills.  When it comes to design, the best way to get better is to do something new every day.  Explore, have fun.  Thanks again.
