Design new Archer splash screen #2BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: HarmanpreetTags: design, graphics, 2D, GUI, splash screen, image, logo

BRL-CAD's new modeling interface, archer, displays a splash screen when you start the program.  This is what it currently looks like:

About Archer image

http://svn.code.sf.net/p/brlcad/code/brlcad/trunk/src/tclscripts/archer/images/aboutArcher.png

There are several problems with that image.  It uses our old logo.  It references the wrong website.  It has a massive pointless "icon".  It proclaim's archer being trademarked.

Your task is to design a completely new splash screen that has none of those problems, is visually interesting, incorporates our new logo, and references are main website (brlcad.org).

Check out some of the other design tasks for inspiration.  Make yours look even more impressive, artistically interesting. ;)

Submit your image in whatever raw working format you use (e.g., psd), preferably something with layers in case we need to change anything, but also submit a final png image as well.

I created two version with different styled logos. If anything needs to be tweaked or change, it can be done easily on the Adobe Illustrator file I provided (I can also directly change it for you if preferred).

Anita, I like the layout and design, but not the modified logo.  If you swap in our actual logo, I think it'll work better.  Check out several of the completed GCI design tasks as there are several logo renditions floating around that you could choose from (2D and 3D versions) or you can use the one on our website.

After that change, would you also try a separate upload using a font without serifs?

I found the png file of the logo

http://brlcad.org/images/angelov_256.png

However I unfortunately couldn't get a crisp logo from this image, so I decided to replicate the logo myself on ai.

No problem on the font change, new font I used is Verdana.

The new files are named BRL-CAD-Archer-Splash-Screen3 and BRL-CAD Archer Splash Screen 2.

Sean on December 19 2013 07:49 UTCbetter!

That's looking much better!  That said, still just a few more issues.  As I mentioned earlier, check out some of the completed GCI design tasks (filter our tasks on "logo" and/or "design") as there are *several* beautiful conversions of the logo into a vector format.  I believe one of them is even in .ai, several others are 3D models and/or CSS that may even import as-is.  The one you used is still just a tiny bit lumpy -- enough that I noticed it right away.

The other issue I see is that your dark background (both the dark gray and the slightly lighter gray lines) contrast poorly with the black in the logo.  I suggest lightening them up 30-60% or find some other way to distinguish the black gear link from the background.

Anita Leungon December 20 2013 00:19 UTCUpdate

I'm sorry, I browsed through files submitted by other folks but I found just png, xcf, and psd files, so I resorted to tweaking the current logo I have (I happened to have subscribed to similar tasks as this which is why I had access to the links of their tasks here, here, here, and here, but I think taken tasks don't show up for search).

So I submitted a new ai and png file. Blew up a picture of the logo and made sure to be more careful in making the logo look flawless (hopefully it's better now!). And made the background lighter for better contrast with the logo.

Looking forward to completing the task, yes? :)

Thank you for working through all the iterations.  This final design looks workable and is a nice improvement.  Well done.

Anita Leungon December 20 2013 05:24 UTCQuestion

Is it okay if I submit more than one design for splash screens?
