Identify 10 places to post an open source solicitationBRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 48 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: open source job, solicitation, post, forums

BRL-CAD is in the process of overhauling our website but we need help.  A previous GCI task wrote up a useful solicitation where we ask for people interested in setting up the website step forward.

This task involves scouring the web and finding ten or more places we can post that solicitation where we might actually attract open source web development talent.  Note that this is NOT a paid position, so you'll need to find where volunteer open source positions can be posted.  This would be places like Sourceforge, Ohloh, and others.  There may be value posting to web development forums as well, but that's your task to figure out.

You need to find at least ten and run them by us to make sure they're all viable possibilities.  You do not need to and should not post the announcement.  Just tell us places that we might want to.

This is a follow-on to this task:

I would like to work on this task.

Harmanpreet Singh on December 18 2012 06:22 UTCTask Assigned

This task has been assigned to Jjca. You have 48 hours to complete this task, good luck!

Jjcaon December 18 2012 06:28 UTCWhat I have to do?

Hi!

Reading the description, I have a question:

Only I've to tell you what pages I suggest to post the solicitation?

For example, I've found Sourceforge, Ohloh, Github. I tell to you and that's it?

And what is 'run them by us to make sure they're all viable possibilities'. Is something like, I tell you the benefits of post in these pages? Or another thing?

Sean on December 18 2012 12:52 UTCit means be specific

So finding 10 websites is not hard, but that doesn't mean this task is going to take you a half-hour and you're done! :)  You need to provide exact URLs and identify posting requirements.  If there's an announcement forum, show us that URL too in addition to the specific URL for submitting a new post.  By requirements, I mean what format can our submission be in?  Text?  HTML?  Anything?  What about images?

By "run it by us", it means let us know what you find like Sourceforge, Ohloh, Github, but with a little more specificity (where on each of those?).  The benefits of posting should be obvious and relevant, so you don't need to identify that unless you want to.

So for example, saying "Dice.com" would be not specific enough, but identifying https://employer.dice.com/common/content/postJobs/index.jsp and noting that they allow text ads but also images if we pick their premium posting service.  That would be sufficient.  This example doesn't count, however, as Dice is for professional paid-for jobs and our position is an unpaid open source volunteer position.

Jjcaon December 18 2012 20:16 UTCThe websites has to be specific?

I've searched websites in the past 3 hours, I've checked SourceForge, GitHub and Ohloh and I haven't found something about "jobs", "volunteer"...

Maybe, I'm searching with wrong keywords or in wrong sites. But I haven't found anything.

I'll continue searching.

Jjca

Sean on December 18 2012 20:22 UTCor the wrong way

I can't really help you with how to search -- that IS the task.  You may, however, be thinking about this the wrong way.  Sourceforge has a news feature, for example, that can be used to post an announcement -- and since I have to tell you that, it can't be one of your 10.  They may have some other blog or feed or forum where volunteer postings can be made, though.  Same goes for github and ohloh.

You may have better luck trying to FIND existing open source volunteer postings.  Search the web as if you were looking to contribute to a project.  You won't find many, but there are some such postings in a variety of places and ways.  You need to identify 10 ways we can spread the word.

Jjcaon December 18 2012 21:13 UTCLanguage

Hi! I've found a website but it's in Spanish... http://www.comocreartuweb.com/ (Como crear tu Web), the website is about how to create a website.

Can I put this website in the work? Or only websites in English?

Sean on December 19 2012 03:44 UTCwhat?

Spanish sites would be okay, but I don't understand how that site is at all relevant to this task.  I don't see anywhere where an announcement could be posted or would be appropriate. You seem to be misunderstanding the task or severely lacking some background information.  Can you describe to me what the task is in different words than our description? What are you supposed to be looking for?

Jjcaon December 19 2012 04:19 UTCWell...

You want 10 websites where post a volunteer job request for a "Web Designer", is voluntary, so the pay is 0.

I've looking for websites where publish that request, like www.dice.com but without pay to publish. Like SourceForge (https://sourceforge.net/people), but it can't be.

I've found some websites, like Dice.com, but the problem is you have to pay to publish. So, that's a problem. If the post is for a voluntary job, it's a wrong option publish in that websites.

I understand two things:

1.- The post have to be free

2.- It has to be in a open source website.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not. I really want to complete this task, I'll continue finding websites. :)

Sean on December 19 2012 04:45 UTCdice is a bad example

So Dice is a bad example.  This isn't a traditional job posting, that was merely a notional example.  Posting to a blog, mailing list, or forum is a valid place where this kind of solicitation could be posted.  Like I said, maybe try to find some other open source work announcements.

Sean on December 20 2012 19:48 UTCI thought uh oh..

especially when I saw you listed IRC channels and the chromuium group (yeah, those don't count), but then I was pleasantly surprised with most of the rest!  That's an interesting list and it includes several possibilities that hadn't been considered.  Thanks!
