Mock up new BRL-CAD website interface design (#2)BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 48 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: web design, PHP, CSS, HTML, Photoshop, Gimp

BRL-CAD's main website needs a facelift.  Design a new website interface with our content included as a mock-up design.

If we like your design, a follow-up task will be to turn the design into a proper drupal and/or mediawiki theme (so you may want to demo the design in CSS).

I would like to work on this task. My earlier task is on review so i will start as soon as it is done. Please give a link to the webpage you want a mock-up to be made of. Also, you curerently want only one page designed right?

Thanks.

Sean on December 11 2012 14:57 UTCeither

The design can be for either http://brlcad.org or http://brlcad.org/wiki/ since those are drupal and mediawiki instances respectively.

Sean on December 11 2012 15:06 UTClogos

there are these: http://brlcad.org/d/node/92 and these: http://brlcad.org/images/logo/

do not use any of the old eagle logos

Sean W. Caldwellon December 13 2012 18:37 UTCWilling to work on it, but need more info about website

Dear Sean:

I am willing to claim this task so long as I know: which logos you want from http://brlcad.org/images/logo/and where you want them. I will also need to know if you want the organization of what you have in your old website in your new website. I have Dreamweaver, so it will really help. Please notify me asap as I would really be glad to design it for you. The only issue I may run into is javascript (I don't have full experience yet, but familiar with some java. Willing to learn js)

Thanks,

Sean Caldwell

Sean on December 13 2012 18:48 UTCnot so formal

Relax, Sean!  :)   You don't need to be so formal or cautious.  The logos on  http://brlcad.org/d/node/92 are fair game (and their better counterparts in the images/logo directory.  Just don't use the eagle logo.

We wouldn't use the output from dreamweaver directly as we have content management systems that the design will get morphed over.  What we're looking for are design concepts.  A mock-up.

You certainly don't need to make a functioning site.  That's a too big of a task for GCI.  Just give us an idea of what you think the site should look like.  Other than not working with the old logo, you have a clean slate to work with.   Impress us with something cool. ;)

After GCI is over, we will likely solicit a webmaster to keep operatings running smoothly and you're welcome to volunteer taking that work on.  Our site gets over a million visitors a year, so it's great resumé material.

Sean on December 16 2012 05:29 UTCdesign not rendering

Sean, the design is not rendering correctly.  There are numerous local and invalid url references.  Even after correcting those manually, it doesn't look like there's much of a design being proposed.  It's our same content, even the same layout, with just a big image up top.  Please let us know if you'd like more time.

Sean W. Caldwellon December 16 2012 07:17 UTCTime Extension and More

Yes I would like more Time. I will also fix all the coding issues. Thank You for the notice. New one will look completely different and should work flawlessly. I only have one problem, I need a bigger picture of the moose.

Thanks,

Sean Caldwell

Sean W. Caldwellon December 16 2012 19:42 UTCDoesn't need to be done. Almost done.

I have fixed up many of the issues, I just need a little more time on the project. Thanks.

Thank You. That should be long enough.

Sean W. Caldwellon December 17 2012 06:21 UTCFinished Product

The most recent 2 files are the final result. Save them under the same folder and they should work. The blank area between the navigation and the posts is supposed to be a carousel, but I don't know how to program a carousel, so I left it blank. Let me know if you want anything else or have questions. As said before, I do have an interest in becoming this open source website's manager. If you want to stay in contact with me here's my email: sean.caldwell3@gmail.com. Thank's and hope you enjoy/ like the rennovation. (Simple, but much more updated).

Sean W. Caldwellon December 17 2012 17:32 UTCThank You

Dear BRL CAD,

Thank you once again.

This is no easy task, designing and programming a webpage. I will submit a screenshot soon and see if I can fix the problem. I think what may be happening is an upload error. I will email you it once done, instead of uploading it to this. If all else fails, I will copy and paste the HTML and CSS onto a google dox, and then give you directions as far as set up. I will see if I can work on the carusel and posting the screenshot, in the meanwhile . Best of luck with other aspects of the project.

Sean W. Caldwellon December 19 2012 05:26 UTCScreenshot and Code from My Idea Now available

I realized that the uploader was causing the issue so I submitted the screenshot like you told me earlier and put the coding into 2 google documents. I hope it works this time.

Sean on December 19 2012 05:49 UTChm.

So the google docs is not helpful, that's not a useful way to exchange design files.

But the screenshot does give the idea.  So you technically have completed the task and we can close the task out if you like, but I have to admit that I'm not very fond of the design or the effort for a variety of reasons:

The logo/title is positioned akwardly against the menus.  The dark blue text against the black background is difficult to read.  The predominant layout is nearly identical to what we currently have other than moving login/register to the top-left corner.  The largest text on the whole page is "Current News", which seems like an akward focus of attention.

So you're welcome to continue working or mark the task as completed, but it's not a design we'll likely use at this point without more effort.

Sean W. Caldwellon December 19 2012 18:52 UTCIdea Issue

My Second idea (which I never posted b/c it didn't work) was completely different from all that I have submitted. The issue behind my second idea was that the logo I could use was 64X64px (moose logo), which is not very big. If you could provide me with a 400X400px(or bigger) copy of the same logo, I would be able to make the design look better/completely different. If you cannot provide me with a 400X400px(or bigger) logo, please let me know asap so I can design my own. As far as the menues go, I have not figured out how to completely center them, but I think I just figured it out. I will contact you if I still have issues with the menues. Finally, what background design would you like? If I cannot create a working visual aid by the deadline, I may let you guys know that you can close it.

Thanks.

Sean W. Caldwell

Sean on December 19 2012 20:09 UTCit's a mock up

The first link I gave in my first "logos" reply had the link that provided a bigger version of the moose and other logos.  Still, the goal is a mock up so even a 400x400 box that said "logo goes here" would work to conceptualize the design.  The logo itself is not the interface and shouldn't be the center of attention.  People come to the site for other reasons and the logo is just part of the identity.  You're certainly welcome to design your own logo as well.

As for the background, something that looks fantastic.  I'd probably lean towards something light instead of dark given we've been on black for several years now, but it's entirely open to interpretation.

As for the task, you've already completed the work that it asked for, so you get credit regardless.  If you'd like more time to work on it, though, we can certainly extend the deadline as long as you like.
