Write a BRL-CAD showcase articleBRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 48 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: showcase, article, news

BRL-CAD has several ongoing development activities developed by community members that showcase the power and applicability of BRL-CAD to various domains. For this task, you'd be expected to interview one or more individuals to obtain information and pictures about their project, write up a descriptive overview of their model, the goals of the project, and any interesting ancillary information that may be relevant. There are presently several candidate topics listed in our Community Publication Portal (CPP).

The output of this task is an article added to our CPP wiki page in a final draft review state.

This task has been assigned to John. You have 48 hours to complete this task, good luck!

Johnon December 5 2012 15:31 UTCWho should I interview

Hi,

can you suggest me someone to interview? I have already some questions.

One more thing. My computer has a problem so I'll only be able to write in the CPP.

Sean on December 5 2012 16:07 UTCresponded on IRC

In addition to the suggestions given to you on IRC, you should read over these two tasks to get an idea of what others have done and what is expected:

I'm going to interview Wu.

Sean on December 6 2012 06:42 UTCmany changes needed

John,

Ah, thanks for pointing that out.  I haven't been able to form an assocation because we don't yet know your name for attribution.  If you'd like to remain semi-anonymous, that's fine, but let us know or we'll keep asking.

As for this latest article, there are several things to work on still:

  1. Expand/explain all acronyms (except "BRL-CAD", it's not an acronym)

  2. There are no pictures... there should be pictures, especially for Wu's work.  Ideally something not already on his project page, but something exemplary from Wu.

  3. math, not maths

  4. use a serial comma (a, b, and c; not a, b and c)

  5. chose to apply to, not choosed

  6. learned, not learnt

  7. worked on, not worked in

  8. First ... should be a new paragraph

  9. "In this project he modified some unfinished conventions and added some primitives" told me nothing about what that implicit to NURBS conversion means

  10. "finished this task before", not "terminated this project in"

  11. last sentence in that paragraph makes no sense

  12. typo in last paragraph, finnaly

I'm getting the sense that you did not proof-read this article nearly as well as the previous...

Sean,

I'm extremely sorry but this time I was a bit under pressure to end the task. I'm already working on it. It'll never happen again.

So several of the problems I pointed out are still problems.  This including expanding ALL acronyms prior to use, 'maths', no pictures, and more.  Please go through the list again more carefully.

Sean,

I've now fulfilled all tasks on the list. The images are on the URL. Also, I can't find the meaning of BREP.

Sean on December 7 2012 17:31 UTCAh I see

John, I see why it was confusing.  You have text here and on the CPP.  You should keep them in sync or provide the cpp url as the next upload so we know where to look for the latest.

Your article needs to stand-alone, so pointing them to a URL saying there are some images there doesn't work.  You should pick one or two that are exemplary or see if Wu wil provide you one or two new ones.

Sean on December 8 2012 03:40 UTCso...

No full name, just "John"?  See earlier question about how to properly credit you in our authorship documentation and announcements.

Sean on December 8 2012 03:40 UTCTask Closed

Congratulations, this task has been completed successfully.

Johnon December 8 2012 06:49 UTCwhere are those?

Can you tell me where to find that documentation?

Thanks in advance.

Sean on December 8 2012 18:26 UTCI can

Of course I can.

However, I've asked you a question several times now and you keep ignoring it...  If you want to remain anonymous, THAT IS FINE.  Just say so.

I completely understand the desire to protect your identity and maintain privacy.  If you provide your full name, it'll potentially be included in our documentation, get posted in news announcements, get posted on our website, get posted in other people's websites, get included in future application credit pages, and potentially much more.  Privacy is important to safeguard, but it's also somewhat counterproductive for getting proper credit for your work.

You decide whether we credit you or not.  It's up to you.  Repeatedly ignoring my question, however, is not cool.

Johnon December 8 2012 18:47 UTCI'll remain anonymous

Ahh! Finaly I understood what you wanted. Then I'll remain semi-anonymous, using only the name John.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Sean on December 8 2012 19:30 UTCyou should ask

OK.  Glad to have that finally sorted out.  For future reference, please say you don't understand or ask for clarification when you don't understand.  Otherwise, it will easily be perceived as being rude, and I'm sure that's not your intention or desire.
