To upgrade to Gallery 3, one must install it on its own and then import the data from Gallery 2.  I do not know the specifics because I have not tried it yet.  MySQl must be upgraded. Apache is up to date (at least enough to work.)  PHP is also up to date enough.  I discovered the importance of dependencies :)
