Design a Commercial CAD Comparison diagramBRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 48 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: diagram, comparison

New users frequently ask how BRL-CAD compares to other major commercial CAD systems such as CATIA, Unigraphics/NX, Pro/ENGINEER, Solidworks, and AutoCAD. BRL-CAD has many of the same features and it would be very useful to visualize the feature overlap graphically with a diagram.

This task involves identifying core significant features of relevance and describing BRL-CAD along with the various major CAD vendors. The diagram should fit on one page.

Nikolay Ivanovon November 29 2012 13:47 UTCAny mentor online that can review my task and approve it??

I have been waiting for over an hour now :(

Sean on November 29 2012 15:02 UTCpatience

While some reviews go very quickly, reviews can actually take up to 36 hours so you'll have to be patient.  See the mailing list for a discussion about what to do while you're "waiting".

That said, this task needs more work...

There are several problems with the "diagram" the first being that it's not really a diagram but rather a collection of graphs.  Of those graphs, only the first one is useful.  Bar charts are an ineffective way to showcase yes/no comparisons (a simple list and/or checkbox would be better).  The license chart is just wrong (we're LGPL+BSD, FreeCAD's status is questionable).  The price chart is disjoint and subjective -- it should be high-low-free or free-low-high, but you don't define those terms.  Even if you did, I'm not sure that's a useful comparison given the limited coverage of features.

This is more along the lines of what is expected:

http://www.google.com/search?q=comparison+diagramtbm=isch

Notice that there's a huge variety there, but most are "visually interesting and informative" regardless of their format.  In terms of the task description, the frequent question is how we compare with the five major CAD systems -- the focus should have been on those, not the five random ones you selected.. :)

Features to compare might be single seat cost, source code availability, number of supported file extensions (which you got), NURBS support, CSG support, mac/windows/linux/solaris/bsd support (you partially have), etc.

Sean on November 29 2012 23:33 UTClooking a little better

Looks a little better, but linux/solaris/freebsd should be separate line items like the other configurations.  Fix that up and we can probably call it done.

Sean on November 29 2012 23:35 UTCalso...

It'd be useful to have the editable original in addition to the image for the final upload so we can include legal disclaimers and update it as the landscape changes.

Nikolay Ivanovon November 30 2012 07:31 UTCNOTE!

this is the original file I made it on paint and no where in the task description does it say to have editable parts so I believe my task is finished this is the only file. So I would appreciate much if you just approve my done work :).

Niklsay,

First of all, I appeciate the efforts you put on this task, but the problem is that you picked random CAD softwares and not the ones mentioned in the task description as said by Sean on 29 November 15:02 UTC. I would like you to do as per given in the description, compare BRL-CAD with specified softwares.

It is really easy and small task, just go to the reference links.

Best of luck. :)

There was no information in the links you gave for Unigraphics/NX and it's the only one not included but I changed it with TurboCAD. I hope that won't be a problem :). And i hope now my task is complete the right way :) thanks btw for the 24h time extension!

Sean on December 24 2012 07:27 UTCplagiarism and deceit

Nikolay, I recently discovered that you blazenly lied about your work on this task.  Moreover, the diagram you submitted is not your own original work.  It is a modified screen capture of http://cad-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ without any attribution whatsoever.

You stated on IRC that you had individually researched each checkmark and selected those CAD packages because of their popularity in your country.  Given those are, in fact, just the default ten reported by that 3rd party site, I'm unfortunately inclined to interpret your actions as being intentionally misleading.  Moreover, it's apparent now that with the unchanged checkboxes and graphs that you didn't research any of the CAD packages we'd requested.  You merely replaced some labels and copied a few checkmarks.  It becomes clear why you were so defensive about providing an editable version.

Plagiarism is absolutely unacceptable.  I will unfortunately be reporting this matter to Google in order to have this task completion rescinded.
