Design a BRL-CAD business card #2BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 100 hrs Mentors: Popescu Andrei, Gauravjeet SinghTags: 2D, business card, design, 3D, graphics

Design a business card for BRL-CAD. These will be cards that community members who got selected in GSOC or in GCI or even for core contributors can give out to others at conferences, meetings, interviews, etc. The design will get filled in with personal information like name, title, phone number, email, maybe a mailing address too.

Submit a one-sided or two-sided design that can be filled in with personal information and sent to a business card printer (or even printed at home).

Designing of BRL-CAD membership cards can be done in LaTeX, GIMP, Photoshop or any other editing software. Please submit your raw working files (e.g., a PSD or XCF with layers) as well as a "preview" example png.

Search the web or other GCI tasks for inspiration, but make sure you only incorporate artwork that we'd have the ability to redistribute without any restriction (look for CC-BY or BSD/MIT license or public domain content), or keep it simple and fully design the card yourself.

Please DO use any of our formal (the three rings) or informal (the moose antlers) logos, include a link to our website in your design, and be sure to put a "dash" in BRL-CAD. Please do NOT create a military-looking theme, use our old eagle logo, or simply copy someone else's design.

Be awesome, be creative, be inspired, be original. ;)

Hey, Jake!

The business card looks neat, however, could you make it's front more BRL-CAD specific?

Goodluck!

Sean on December 9 2014 07:19 UTClove the original design

Jake, I really like this design.  Very original and refreshing!  I particularly like the symmetry of the front circle with the back "bullets" but agree with Andrei that it's slightly too generic.  Perhaps the Front could be the black portion of the logo or zoomed in on the logo (huge).

Also, you went with a very narrow column on the front which is great for a short and simple name like John Doe, but difficult for longer names.  How does it work for someone with a longer name, say a name like Jackqueline Magalona de Encarnación?

Ditto on a longer e-mail example, e.g. jackqueline.encarnacion@gmail.com

Would also like to see a phone number and title mentioned / mentionable somewhere.

Hope you like them.

Popescu Andrei on December 10 2014 13:19 UTC

Interesting idea, Aditya, looks quite nice! However, here are some suggestions on how to improve it:

front:

-most items look ok,  but the business card looks a bit too crowded

    -background color is too powerful

-try going with a lighter background color, or white

-could you move the link(brlcad.org ) on the back?

back:

   -  the overlapping logo makes the card look somewhat condensed, you can t distinguish clearly any of these logo's

   - same comments on background

Sean on December 10 2014 14:16 UTCtoo many brl-cad's :)

Aditya, this is looking pretty good and a nice progression/improvement, but I think there's still a few technical issues that could be improved:

  • On the back, the logo is not centered in the circle and the three different shades of red/pink clash a little.  On the front, it worked better because of layering but here you've introduced a new color.

  • On the back, it's a little redundant to see www.brlcad.org and BRL-CAD together.

  • On the front, saying BRL-CAD twice is again redundant.

  • The logo is low-resolution on both the back and front (suggest searching the other GCI tasks for 2014 *and* 2013 for higher-resolution versions, see http://brlcad.org/gci/logo and http://brlcad.org/wiki/Logo for more details).

Sean on December 11 2014 03:24 UTCmisunderstood

Aditya, I believe you misunderstood my comment regarding the logo on the back.  I said the *logo* was not centered in the circle.  You centered the circle on the card.  The logo is still not centered.  Moreover, the logo seems to have grown warts around the outside edges!

The front looks better.

Sir,

I Have Uploaded 2 new files in which I Have Removed The warts And Aligned The Logo With The Center Of The Circle.

But I Have Not Moved It To The Exact Center (that Is Downwards) As It Doesn't Look Good At All, Believe Me.

Hope You Like The New Files.

Regards,

Aditya.
