Design a BRL-CAD business card #6BRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: Gauravjeet SinghTags: design, graphics, 2D, 3D, business card

Design a business card for BRL-CAD. These will be cards that community members who got selected in GSOC or in GCI or even for core contributors can give out to others at conferences, meetings, interviews, etc. The design will get filled in with personal information like name, title, phone number, email, maybe a mailing address too.

Submit a one-sided or two-sided design that can be filled in with personal information and sent to a business card printer (or even printed at home).

Designing of BRL-CAD membership cards can be done in LaTeX, GIMP, Photoshop or any other editing software. Please submit your raw working files (e.g., a PSD or XCF with layers) as well as a "preview" example png.

Search the web or other GCI tasks for inspiration, but make sure you only incorporate artwork that we'd have the ability to redistribute without any restriction (look for CC-BY or BSD/MIT license or public domain content), or keep it simple and fully design the card yourself.

Please DO use any of our formal (the three rings) or informal (the moose antlers) logos, include a link to our website in your design, and be sure to put a "dash" in BRL-CAD. Please do NOT create a military-looking theme, use our old eagle logo, or simply copy someone else's design.

Be awesome, be creative, be inspired, be original. ;)

This is looking interesting, different from others we've seen, but I notice just a few issues:

  • The shadow is distracting, makes title harder to read.  Either need to reduce the offset or reduce the spread, or eliminate entirely.

  • It's awkward that some objects have a shadow and others do not.  Suggest removing them all.

  • The logo seems horizontally "squished"?  Especially the small one, it's wrong.  The gear's inner and outer "ovals" should be circles.

  • Having the gear logo twice seems highly redundant/unnecessary.  Suggestions of what to do about that are, of course, welcome.

Sir,

If I remove the shadows and adjust the size of logo will it do?

moreover what I have seen is that the background logo resembles a watermark this gives an effect that the card is official or somewhat (legal i.e.- belongs to the original company). This thing I have seen in many dummy cards also and i suggest you to keep it as it looks nice ;)

Thank you

Sir,

Placement of background logo towards left or some other side also gives good effect so, please see these new ones

Let's work with the "enlarged" version, it looks the most distinct of the set.  That said, the resolution is much too low.  Right now, your template is 391x199.  This is incredibly too low.  It should be something like 3900x2000 in order for it to print correctly.

You need to make it bigger, but then you'll also need a much higher resolution logo.  Search the completed GCI design tasks where you should be able to find several.  Don't just take the image file on our website and scale it up or it'll look horrible.  You should not be able to see jagged edges (pixels) down the edges around the logo.  Also, make the logo interior be pure white.
