Design a BRL-CAD business card #5BRL-CAD

Design a business card for BRL-CAD. These will be cards that community members who got selected in GSOC or in GCI or even for core contributors can give out to others at conferences, meetings, interviews, etc. The design will get filled in with personal information like name, title, phone number, email, maybe a mailing address too.

Submit a one-sided or two-sided design that can be filled in with personal information and sent to a business card printer (or even printed at home).

Designing of BRL-CAD membership cards can be done in LaTeX, GIMP, Photoshop or any other editing software. Please submit your raw working files (e.g., a PSD or XCF with layers) as well as a "preview" example png.

Search the web or other GCI tasks for inspiration, but make sure you only incorporate artwork that we'd have the ability to redistribute without any restriction (look for CC-BY or BSD/MIT license or public domain content), or keep it simple and fully design the card yourself.

Please DO use any of our formal (the three rings) or informal (the moose antlers) logos, include a link to our website in your design, and be sure to put a "dash" in BRL-CAD. Please do NOT create a military-looking theme, use our old eagle logo, or simply copy someone else's design.

Aditya, tasks are reviewed in the order in which they are received and there are dozens of participants every day actively working, so please be patient.  It may take up to 36 hours to review a task, so all the more reason to get your work right the first time.


Your design seems a little too basic, uninspired, with little to no relation to our project (a computer graphics design system).  Please review some of the other completed design tasks for a comparison of what is possible.  I suggest trying a different approach, something that incorporates graphics beyond a simple gradient.


That said, there are specific issues with your design that will need to be fixed before this design could be considered complete:



  • The font is undesirable.  The serifs contrast with our logo-text font and don't look good.

  • The URLs on the front and back are outright wrong.

  • What is picture supposed to be?  Perhaps provide an example.

  • Gender on a card is inappropriate.

  • There should be a dash between BRL-CAD.

  • The teal blue and maroon colors conflict with the red and black logo colors.

With the design you're suggesting, the main logo is really crowded by the other information and there seems to be no order to the layout.  Care to share your thinking?

Aditya, this is looking better.  A simple deisgn is fine and the layout of the text and logo you added look good, but try to be more creative with the background.  At a minimum, that teal blue color is just horrible... :)  I suggest trying colors based on our logo and/or grays so that it doesn't look so washed out.  You could also try some subtle geometric shapes instead of a gradient.  Again, check out some of the other completed designs or do a Google image search for inspiration.

This is looking better, but a few issues are introduced:



  • Where is the background image from?  (Must have rights to redistribute)

  • The resolution is far too low.  It's currently 369x213.  It should be at least 10x bigger to print well.  Make your template 3900x2200 or some size close to that.  DON'T just scale up what you have -- it will look absolutely horrible that way.  You must design it at a high-resolution from the beginning.

  • BRL-CAD is not an incorporated company, so no "Inc." and even the work BRL-CAD doesn't  need to be part of the address.

  • The "final back" design looks squished horizontally.  The logo nodes should be circles and by changing their scale asymmetrically, you've made them into ovals and the text is compressed.  The text also has hints of white that you didn't remove.

  • The centers of the gear logo circles should be white with this design.
