G-VDB(1)

NAME

g-vdb - convert BRL-CAD geometry to an OpenVDB voxel volume

On this page

SYNOPSIS

g-vdb [-s "dx dy dz"] [-d n] [-t f] model.g objects...

DESCRIPTION

g-vdb voxelizes one or more objects from a BRL-CAD geometry database (.g) and writes the result as an OpenVDB volume. Each named object is sampled on a regular voxel grid via ray tracing; voxels whose fractional fill meets the threshold are stored as a signed level set. The output is always written to a file named file.vdb in the current directory, which can then be consumed by OpenVDB-aware tools and renderers.

At least one geometry database and one object must be supplied on the command line.

OPTIONS

-s "dx dy dz"

Set the voxel cell size along the X, Y, and Z axes (a single space-separated, quoted triple). Defaults to "1.0 1.0 1.0".

-d n

Set the level of detail (subsampling depth) used while voxelizing. Higher values yield a finer result at greater cost. Defaults to 4.

-t f

Set the fill threshold in the range 0.0 to 1.0. A voxel is marked solid only when its fractional occupancy is at least this value. Defaults to 0.5.

EXAMPLES

Example 1. Voxelize a component at fine resolution
g-vdb -s "0.5 0.5 0.5" -d 6 -t 0.4 havoc.g havoc
mv file.vdb havoc.vdb

Samples the havoc object from havoc.g using half-millimeter voxels at a higher level of detail, marking any voxel that is at least 40% filled. Because g-vdb always writes to file.vdb, the result is renamed so a subsequent run does not overwrite it.
