D-A(1)

NAME

d-a - convert double-precision binary numbers to ASCII

On this page

SYNOPSIS

d-a [-n] < doubles > ascii

DESCRIPTION

d-a reads a stream of machine-native double-precision (8-byte) binary floating point values from standard input and writes each one as a decimal number in ASCII text to standard output, one value per line. Values are formatted with up to nine significant digits.

Because the input is raw binary, d-a refuses to run when standard input is a terminal. The inverse conversion, from ASCII text to binary doubles, is performed by a-d(1).

This command is deprecated and is scheduled for removal; it prints a deprecation warning on startup.

DEPRECATION

d-a is one of the legacy signal-analysis conversion filters that are being folded into the general-purpose data-conversion tool cv(1). New work should use cv(1), which performs the same binary-to-ASCII numeric conversions (and many others) through a single interface. d-a is retained for backward compatibility with existing scripts and still prints a deprecation warning when run.

OPTIONS

-n

Number the output. Each line is prefixed with a zero-based index giving the position of the value within the stream.

EXAMPLES

Example 1. Inspect a binary double stream
a-d 1.0 2.5 -3.75 | d-a

Generates three binary doubles with a-d(1) and converts them back to human-readable ASCII, printing one value per line.

Example 2. Index the values in a binary file
d-a -n < values.d | head

Reads doubles from the file values.d and prints each value preceded by its position in the stream, which is useful for locating a particular sample when debugging signal-processing pipelines built with dmod(1) or dconv(1).
