Add BRL-CAD newbie article to our wikiBRL-CAD
Status: ClosedTime to complete: 72 hrs Mentors: SeanTags: wiki, documentation, tutorial

This is a follow-on task to http://www.google-melange.com/gci/task/view/google/gci2013/5398773085765632 that anyone may claim after that task is completed.

This task involves adding that task to the BRL-CAD wiki as a new tutorial.  Add the article to http://brlcad.org/wiki/Tutorial/Newbie as well as to the Main_Page under the tutorial section.  Add all images, cropped appropriately (this is important!), and sized so that they are legible.

This task MOSTLY involves preparing the images so that they look good and work well on the wiki as an article.  If you just add them to the wiki as-is without doing anything to them, your task will be rejected.  You need to crop the images to meaningful areas.  You might want to add annotations or zoom in on areas or change the contrast so that they're easier to see.  You may even need to recreate some images so that the wireframes are easy to see.

Of course, proof-read the article and make sure there are no grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes.  See the numerous other tutorials listed on the main wiki page for examples to follow and ideas.

Cameron, this is looking like a good start but some more work is needed on the images.  As the task description notes, you're going to need to modify the images, re-render some, crop, zoom, etc to make them work as a tutorial.

Here are some specific things to fix:

  • The Shapes.PNG image [0] is unnecessary and poor quality.  Delete it and just link to http://brlcad.org/gallery/diagrams/primitives instead.

  • With the exception of Help.PNG, the four screenshots are just terrible.  You can't tell what they are and there is much empty/wasted space.  You'll need to change all four:

    • The first Sphere.PNG image, you cannot read the text or easily see the sphere.  Need to zoom in on the text, crop to it, and thicken the wireframe.  You can do the latter with an image editing program or with the 'rset' command in mged to set the wireframe thickness.

    • The second Cube.PNG image is better, but cannot read the command text.  Also, if I run that right after creating the sphere, that is not what I'll see.

    • The third image, also Cube.PNG, is redundant and doesn't provide any value unless you change the second.

    • The fourth RT.PNG image needs to be regenerated.  There's an error in the render and it's too small.  Running "autoview" and "zoom 1.9" before "rt" would have made for a better image.
